'The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made' Lives Up to Its Promise (VIDEO)

epic safety video

Every now and then, an airline’s creative take on that ubiquitous air safety video hits the news. Like for instance Southwest flight attendant Marty Cobb, whose pre-takeoff safety routine turned a boring, if-you’ve-heard-it-once-you’ve-heard-it-a-million-times speech about emergency exit locations and seat buckling procedures into a hilarious three-minute journey to a comedy club.

Air New Zealand just might have Marty beat in terms of effort, though, because the video the airline has dubbed “The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made” is, no joke, insanely epic. Thanks to the team behind the Hobbit film trilogy, this clip might make you pony up for an overseas flight — just so you can see it broadcast from the seat in front of you.

Most of us tend to tune out during the safety video or presentation, but Air New Zealand has virtually guaranteed all eyes will be on the screen by putting together an insane video featuring Sylvester McCoy, Dean O'Gorman, and Elijah Wood. The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made is mostly set in Middle Earth and includes an orc, a massive eagle, a wizard, elves, dwarves, a battle scene (of course!), and even a cameo by director Peter Jackson.

It’s also, of course, a nice plug for the newest Hobbit movie, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which is set to be released on December 17. But even if you aren’t much of a Hobbit fan, the clip is seriously fun to watch.

Take a look:

Shut UP Air New Zealand that was so awesome. I love that the battle ends in EPIC HUGS.

Your move, all other airlines. I mean, no pressure or anything, but the bar has officially been raised to 30,000 feet.

How great is this safety video?
