Gay Pair Voted ‘Cutest Couple’ at Their High School -- Hooray!

guys holding handsYearbook superlatives have long been a high school tradition for seniors. Most Likely to Succeed. Most School Spirit. Best Smile. While the categories have barely changed (maybe there's a Funniest Tweets now), the honorees certainly have. Recently a gay couple was awarded Best Couple. It was the first time in their school's history that a same sex couple was even considered for it.

It's pretty amazing. Lots of things have changed when it comes to gay rights. Most notable is the fact they finally have the right to wed -- in some states. Though despite some great strides, there are still so many close-minded people in this world. Gay students face so much discrimination, especially in high school. So it's wonderful to see the student body be so open and accepting of Brad Taylor and Dylan Meehan by voting for them.

An adorable photo of the pair was printed in the yearbook of them standing close, smiling, and looking genuinely happy. The world found out about the honor after a friend of theirs posted it to her Tumblr blog, and within one day, it had been shared 100,000 times. All the attention has been a bit of a shock to the couple, as they described in an email to The Huffington Post:

This whole thing has been a bit surreal for us because we have been raised to believe that love is love. We never realized that our happiness and openness would inspire so many individuals. The support we have received from our family, friends, and even strangers has led us to believe that our affection for each other is normal ... When we started dating a year [ago], the thought of a photo of us traveling throughout the world would be a bit frightening, but now we are proud to be part of the LGBT community.

Such a sweet and wonderful thing to happen. It can be hard for teens to be comfortable with who they are -- especially when that opens them up to ridicule and cruelty. So Brad and Dylan's bravery, as well as their peers' accepting nature, is something we should all admire. It not only has an impact on their lives, but those of so many others. It does us all proud, don't you think?
