Rethinking the R-Word: Spread the Word to End the Word (VIDEO)

r-word videoToo often the stories we hear about teens making YouTube videos end with somebody getting arrested, suspended, or worse. So it's downright inspiring to see a video like the one this girl made about her brother Dan. Part of the "R-Word: Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign, it's a powerful reminder of how a word so many people use so thoughtlessly can cause so much harm.

Dan was born with Down Syndrome. The word in question? "Retard."

Look, I know how easy it is to use a word like retard or retarded without meaning any actual offense -- often without even stopping to think about what the word really means. But for those with disabled family and friends, it's like a slap across the face every time they hear it spoken aloud.

That's why thousands of people are pledging to "spread the word to end the word" online. And today, March 7, is Spread the Word to End the Word Day -- so if you haven't made the pledge yet, now's the perfect time!

Of course you don't need any convincing, but this video would do the job if you did:

Will you pledge to "Spread the Word to End the Word"?
