Girl Scouts Who Punched Thief Were Brave but Stupid

girl scout cookiesAs far as I know there's no badge to be had, but two bad ass Girl Scouts in Texas recently earned the admiration of many when they refused to let a couple of thieves get away with their cookie money without a fight.

It happened outside of a Walmart store in Sugar Land, a town near Houston. Senior Cadet scouts Rachel Johnson and Iravia Cotton, both 15, were selling their cookies when a car with two men in it pulled up and started questioning them about the cookies. At some point the man in the passenger seat grabbed the box with their sales money it -- about $200 in all -- and started to drive off with it.

Johnson and Cotton weren't about to let them get away so easily.

The girls told station KTRK that without thinking they went after the offenders. Cotton said she actually punched one thief:

I started hitting the boy who was in the passenger seat. So I think he learned his lesson a little bit.

Meanwhile, Johnson grabbed onto the side of the car with no intent of letting go. The car dragged her for a bit and even ran over her hand.

Good for them?

Honestly, while their bravery is admirable on one hand, it was really just downright reckless to do what they did. It's a great story, and fortunately, the girls walked away with just some minor scrapes and bruises, but it could have been much worse. It's one thing to be loyal and brave, but another to risk your life for a couple hundred dollars.

In the end, the thieves got away with the money, and to make matters worse, the girls were going to have to pay the money back as each troop is responsible for the funds for cookies. Fortunately,  local citizens rallied with calls into a local radio station offering donations and showed the good side of humanity.

As for the thieves, I think there's a special flavor of karma coming after them. As Johnson said, "Who steals from a Girl Scout? I mean, seriously? That's like the worst thing ever."

What do you think your children would have done in a similar situation? Do you think these girls were brave or stupid?
