Inspiring 7-Year-Old Reminds Us 'Tis Better to Give Than to Receive

bradley thomasHard to believe that the holiday decorations are out in stores already and that there are Christmas carols on the radio, but 'tis the start of the season, I suppose. I bet there are a lot of adults and kids out there already making their lists and checking them twice, but, heck, it's never too early to be reminded that this time of year is more about giving than it is receiving. An adorable 7-year-old boy in Georgia is setting an example for us all.

Bradley Thomas was assigned a community service project for his taekwondo class, and he instantly thought of the Moody family who had lost their home to a fire a few months earlier, and were living in a crowded motel room in the meantime.

The Moodys have a 12-year-old son and twin 10-year-old girls, and the mother, Kelly, says that getting by day to day is hard enough, that she can't even think about Christmas. That's where Bradley comes in.

He started doing odd jobs for his neighbors for some cash and started collecting money at church. Over the course of a few weeks, he'd earned over $300, all of which he plans to spend on presents for the Moody children. He came up with the idea all by himself and he's carried it out all by himself. When Kelly Moody found out about what Bradley was doing, she was understandably moved to tears.

What a sweet, selfless, and thoughtful little boy -- I just want to give him a hug and a nicely wrapped present. But I guess that's exactly the point of his actions, whether intended or not -- that giving is more fulfilling than receiving.

Bradley's story is probably the first of many inspirational stories we'll hear in the next six weeks or so, and I hope he knows what a great job he's doing. If you'd like to help the Moody family this holiday, email Bradley's dad Dewayne Thomas at dewayne_1980@hotmail.com.

Do you encourage your kids to help others?
