Gutsy Teen Uses Mom's Death to Save Other Lives (VIDEO)

KaitThere isn't a parent alive who really likes to think about how their kids will fare after they're gone. But admit it, you've done it, haven't you? If you're anything like me, you've had at least one of those anxious moments when you chewed on your fingernails and fretted about your baby living without you. But a teenage girl named Kait is trying to make your burden just a little bit lighter.

On October 5, 2011, Kait's mom died. She found her. In the woods. Hanging. And on October 24, three days before her 16th birthday, Kait took to YouTube with the most powerful suicide prevention video I think I've ever seen.

Three weeks after her mom took her own life, Kait had already accepted that living her own life is the best tribute to her mom. Her decision to use her story to prevent other people, especially other teenagers, from taking their own lives is oddly comforting in its sadness. Kait has suffered the kind of tragedy that many, many people older than her haven't recovered from, and she's using her youthful optimism about life to harness the tragedy to change lives.

It could be said that this is the difference between losing someone when you're young vs. when you're old. As adults, we own our grief. As kids, we see the opportunity to share our grief with the world to effect change:

Not every kid is going to have the strength of a Kait. But her story made me smile through the tears. Kids really can be alright, can't they?

Did you suffer a devastating loss as a child? How did it shape your future?
