Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato Prove Teens Need a BFF

demi lovato selena gomezWe all get by with a little help from our friends, and that's especially true for girls during the teen years, when BFF = life preserver. Just look at this pic of long-time besties Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato at the Teen Choice Awards. Demi seems to be holding on to Selena for dear life, while Selena has one arm around Demi's shoulders in a protective gesture: Don't mess with my girl.

How sweet is that? The awards were the first big "event" Demi has braved since seeking treatment for "emotional and physical issues," and as such, I can only assume that she was feeling pretty nervous. Selena's show of support proves that she's a true blue BFF, which is exactly what every girl needs to survive. I wouldn't have made it through high school without mine!

The thing about being a teen is that it always feels like you're under attack: Parents, teachers, boys, mean girls ... at any given time, there's somebody either misunderstanding you or criticizing you or rejecting you or trying to stand in your way. Best friends are always on your side, no matter what. A really good friend is like home base -- if you're with her, then you're safe.

There's nobody else who really gets what you're going through, and that's because she's going through the same things. Best friends need each other to process their every experience, which is why it seems like teen girls are constantly on the phone/texting/chatting. I remember feeling like until I told my friends about something, it hadn't really happened. Whether it was a date or an argument with my mother or a sale at the Gap, nothing was real until my girls helped me to thoroughly rehash every last detail.

I can't imagine how much harder high school would be without best friends, which is why I'm praying my daughter and her best bud stick together for the next few years. And if they do, that'll most likely cement their friendship for life: I've kept the same best friends I had in high school, and I wouldn't trade them for the world.

Do you think every teen girl needs a BFF to survive?
