The 'Riverdale' Tribute to Luke Perry Has Us in a Puddle of Tears

It's been hard enough coping with the unexpected death of Luke Perry, but now, it's time to say goodbye to Fred Andrews too. On Wednesday night's season premiere, Riverdale paid tribute to Luke. And even though we knew this was going to be a totally heartbreaking episode, somehow, it was even sadder than we imagined -- and fans and cast members have both already taken to Twitter to share their reactions.

  • Although Luke's final episode of 'Riverdale' aired last season, we finally witnessed Fred's death on Wednesday.

Now we know that he died while pushing someone -- wait, no, not someone ... a woman played by his former Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Shannen Doherty, appropriately enough -- out of the way of an oncoming vehicle.

Every single second of the episode was tough to watch. Seeing Archie find out what had happened, deciding to go retrieve his father's body himself, the funeral, and everything that happened in between.

But it definitely seemed like a proper sendoff for Luke and his character.

  • Lili Reinhart, who plays Betty, tweeted along with the ep, writing about how much it meant to her.

It's clear that this cast was so close, and as the characters of the show reacted to Fred's death, the emotion truly seemed genuine -- probably because it was.

The episode was a great way to honor Luke, and we know the cast will keep his memory alive.

  • Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica, also shared her thoughts.

It was easy to tell that the cast really did put their hearts into this one, as Camila said. It had to have been tough for them to revisit their grief for the sake of this episode, but what resulted was a tribute to Luke that really stood up to what a great guy all who knew him constantly say he was.

  • Fans definitely seemed touched by the episode too.

Seeing Archie bring his father home, surrounded by people of Riverdale who had been affected by Fred's death? It was almost too much.

And then seeing Pop standing there too? That really got us in the feels.

  • And this tweet summed up how everyone felt pretty well:

We've seen some pretty crazy (read: completely unrealistic) stuff on Riverdale over the years, but this episode couldn't possibly have been more perfect. It seemed like the true sendoff that both Luke and Fred truly deserved.

  • 'Riverdale' won't be the same without Luke.

We know that his former costars will never forget him, and neither will his fans. It's still hard to believe that Luke is gone, especially after the legendary career that he had, but it's clear that his memory will continue to live on.
