Andrew Glennon Files for Custody of James as Amber Portwood Is Hit With 3 Felony Charges

Amber Portwood, Andrew Glennon

He isn't taking any chances when it comes to protecting his son. Amber Portwood's boyfriend and baby daddy, Andrew Glennon, has reportedly filed for full custody of their son, James, following Amber's arrest for alleged domestic assault last week. According to TMZ, he filed as a "protective measure," and this is not necessarily the end of their relationship.

  • Andrew reportedly filed for sole custody of 13-month-old James on Tuesday.

A source told Us Weekly, "Andrew is doing it as a protective measure to ensure whatever happens with upcoming court rulings, their son will have the best outcome regardless. Amber and Andrew still really care about each other and this is not the end of their relationship."

We're taking that with a grain of salt, considering that he wasn't the one to bail her out of jail over the weekend, after she was arrested for allegedly assaulting him while he was holding their baby. Radar Online reported that an unnamed woman who was unrelated to Portwood posted her $2,000 cash bond and got her out.

  • Andrew reportedly texted law enforcement officers before 3 a.m. Friday morning, claiming his and James' lives were in danger.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, they received a troubling text from Andrew. In the released dispatch audio, a responder can be heard saying, "I received a text message from somebody saying that their life and their son's life is in danger."

The police department issued a statement after the arrest, which happened around 3 a.m. July 5. It said, "Officers spoke to the male victim who stated his live-in-girlfriend and he were having a disagreement. During which time the female, later identified as Amber Portwood assaulted him, while he was holding their 1-year-old child. Officers spoke to Amber Portwood at the scene. She was subsequently arrested for her alleged actions in this incident."

  • Amber has been charged with three felonies over the incident, including "criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon."

Prosecutors hit Amber with three felony charges this week, including domestic battery, criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon, and domestic battery committed in the presence of a child less than 16 years old.

The police report indicates that Amber hit Andrew with a shoe, leaving marks on his neck, but it's unclear if that was the "deadly weapon" referred to. Yahoo News reports that all three charges are considered Level 6 felonies, and she could be sentenced to six months to two and a half years in jail for each charge. Amber is due in court later today for her first appearance since her arrest last week.

  • It's hard to know what the outcome will be, but Andrew is doing the right thing for James.

Amber clearly needs serious help, and it's not Andrew's job to fix her. He needs to think of his son and keep him safe, and let Amber deal with the consequences of her actions. Of course he still cares about her, but their son needs to be his number one priority right now.
