And just like that, it's over. Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimadli have officially broken up, shocking exactly no one who has ever watched them do an interview together since he proposed last season on The Bachelor.

Just five months after he popped the question, the couple issued a joint statement to E! News.

"It's with a great amount of heartbreak for the both us as we have decided to end our engagement," they said. "We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairytale ending we hoped for. We will continue to be there for each other no matter what. This hasn't been an easy decision, however, as we part ways, we do so with lots of love and admiration for each other."

The couple was famously critiqued early in their relationship for being "awkward," but seemed to settle into each other more and more. They've been spending most of their time in Los Angeles, but Nick reportedly made several trips to her hometown of Montreal.

When they were courting on The Bachelor, Vanessa made it clear that her family was super important to her, and expressed a lot of reluctance to move away from them. It seemed like they were really trying to find a happy medium of living together in LA, and visiting her family in Canada.

Vanessa also remarked that she loved "staying home in [her] pajamas" with her fiancé. In May she shared that she loved not having to get all done up to go out on fancy dates, and truly enjoyed the DL time with Nick. She said, "I discovered his cooking skills like the morning after we got engaged. He was making his delicious French toast. Just staying home and lounging is nice."

Ultimately, though, it just wasn't meant to be. We'd love to say we didn't see this coming, but alas ... we're not surprised. Best of luck to the both of them moving forward.
