Three 'Teen Mom' Stars Are in Hot Water Over Their Instagram Posts

Uh-oh! Three Teen Mom stars are in trouble over their Instagram posts. Not the usual hot water we hear about from fans outraged over the stars' parenting/clothing/breathing choices, but hot water with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over their sponsored posts. 


Maci Bookout, Farrah Abraham, and Chelsea (Houska) DeBoer all got warning letters last month stating that when it comes to sponsored posts in which they're promoting products and services in exchange for money, they must be clear that they're doing so with language that is "unambiguous" and "stands out." Basically, they have to make sure it's clear that the post is an advertisement and not just a personal recommendation. The FTC apparently also doesn't want to see a lot of hashtags in these posts because it makes the disclosure murky. #bummer

The Teen Mom trio aren't the only ones who got their hands smacked either. There were reportedly 90 letters of warning sent out to 45 celebrities, their agents, and the brands they're repping. Other recipients included Heidi Klum, Lindsay Lohan, and Scott Disick.

The rules only apply to things celebrities are being paid to promote. If it's just something they buy for themselves and happen to love, then they're free to share with followers just how much they love it.

It's great that the FTC is trying to keep that distinction clear, because let's face it, many of us take our favorite stars' recommendations as Bible. If they're just giving them because they're being paid to, well then we need to know that. Of course, some stars truly do seem to love the products they're being paid to promote, so it doesn't mean we won't take those recs too -- it's just good to know which is which.

Hopefully the celebrities will heed this warning and follow the rules, because we love stalking their feeds. #andwearen'tbeingpaidtosaythat
