Amber Portwood Gets Real About Living With Debilitating Mood Disorders

Talking about keeping things real. Amber Portwood recently opened up about her struggle with mental health, and we can't even imagine what this girl has gone through. The Teen Mom OG star shared what it's like living with depression and mood disorders, and it's clear that she's overcome a lot.

Amber spilled to Cosmopolitan this week that sometimes her depression gets so bad that it's difficult to even get out of bed. "My life stops when I'm depressed because there's no getting out of it. There's no shaking it off because it's a chemical imbalance," she divulged. "When I get depressed, my depression is laying in bed, not moving, not wanting to even take a shower."

She feels like her fiancé Matt Baier has been instrumental in helping her overcome her day-to-day struggles, and has been a huge support. She said that it's hard to go out in public at all because of her anxiety, even to do something fun like go see a movie. "Matt's had to pull me out of bed I don't know how many times and start the shower for me because I've been so down," she confessed.

Amber did a year and a half in jail several years ago on drug charges, and now knows that she was self-medicating at the time. She explained, "I've just been screwed up since the beginning, which is a big reason why I used to self-medicate as well. I'm glad I have professional help now."

Leah's mom also opened up on a recent episode of Teen Mom OG, telling producers that she struggles with multiple conditions, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder.

"The borderline personality is a new diagnosis that I obviously don't want to believe, but my therapist believes it. It's hard. I was diagnosed with bipolar a long time ago," she said. "It's really hard. I think people don't quite understand what it's like to be bipolar and then have something like borderline personality on top of it, plus you have anxiety disorder."

Ugh, we can't even imagine how emotionally difficult it must be for Amber to stay so on top of her life! Not only has she gained joint custody of Leah, she and Matt have been working hard flipping real estate, and of course, filming for MTV.

It's a lot to handle, but thankfully she has one super bright spot in her life that makes everything worth it: her 7-year-old daughter Leah, whom she endearingly calls Boo Boo. When asked about her kiddos, Amber said, "Boo Boo's doing great! Oh, my God, she's such a happy kid. It's amazing. She won't cuss. She won't be mean. [She's] very smart."

We couldn't be happier to hear it.
