Catelynn Lowell Gets Candid About Abortion, Adoption & Her Struggle With PPD

Catelynn (Lowell) Baltierra has had one heck of a year, but that's not stopping her from enjoying the heck out of life right now. We recently got a chance to chat with the Teen Mom OG star and find out how life has been since we saw her last season.

Cate and Tyler tied the knot just a year ago, but they've been together well over a decade -- since they were in junior high. In case you need a refresher, the couple chose adoption for their firstborn daughter, Carly, after getting pregnant at 16.

Fast-forward several years, and they're not only still together -- they're celebrating their first wedding anniversary this month, and raising 19-month-old Novalee Reign. They've been through a lot since then, and Cate kept it real while chatting with us about some of the very tough decisions she and Ty have had to make since they found out they were pregnant in high school.

While she's been an outspoken advocate for the pro-life movement, Cate admitted that abortion did cross her mind when she first found out she was expecting at 16. She shared that she's always had a pro-life mindset, and even aced an essay on the subject in seventh grade, but having Carly "solidified" her beliefs even more.

"People say all the time, 'Oh, I'm pro-life, I don't believe in abortion,'" she explained. "But until it happens to you, and you're young, and you have an unexpected pregnancy ... that's hard."

Ultimately, she made the decision to keep the baby after having a heart-to-heart with Tyler about it. They discussed the medical facts about the procedure and what they believed, and decided that it wasn't worth it for them when they felt like they had another alternative with adoption.

Because she's been in a situation where she had to choose to continue or terminate a pregnancy is one of many reasons why she has zero judgment for women who have chosen abortion, or support the right to do so. "These are my personal beliefs, but I'm not going to talk about you wrongly or say you're a bad person, or try to drill my beliefs into your head," she said.

The Baltierras chose an open adoption, and have an ongoing relationship with Carly's parents, Brandon and Teresa Davis. They get to see their biological daughter about once a year, and Cate explained that while Nova is too young to grasp the concept that she has a sister being raised by different parents, she does know who Carly is, and they keep pictures of her around the house.

Cate gushed about what a doll little Nova is, and assured us that she's even cuter in real life than on camera -- as if that were even possible. Even so, it hasn't been all roses since her arrival on New Year's Day in 2015. Cate thought her lifelong struggle with depression and anxiety was on overdrive, but she was eventually diagnosed with postpartum depression.

Thanks to a great therapist and monthlong stint in a treatment center where she learned to better care for her emotional well-being, she's doing much better these days. She shared, "Since I've been home, I've had two panic attacks, but they were more manageable than usual ... I feel like it's not as bad as it used to be, and I can manage it by being mindful and doing things, and it works! I'd come home and be like, 'Oh my God, babe -- I had a panic attack and it was so manageable!' I mean, who gets excited about having a panic attack?"

She told us that when she feels overwhelmed, she likes to take a walk outside, especially by the river, and just be in the present, and take in the beauty the world has to offer. She also will listen to calming music, and use some special breathing techniques.

As for Tyler, Cate said he is "absolutely" a great support for her, in all ways. Not only does he emotionally support her, but as she said, he "held the fort down" while she was away getting better. MTV cameras weren't allowed to film at the facility, but Cate reassured us that they got a ton of footage of Ty and Nova managing back home while she was gone.

We can't wait to watch.
