What 10 'Dowdy' TV Actors Look Like In Real Life (PHOTOS)

Dowdy is the new hot! Not all TV stars are sexy on-screen. In fact, some characters are downright blah, from foreign exchange student Fez on That '70s Show to awkward Raj on The Big Bang Theory. Don't let the characters' hum-drum appearances deceive you. Offscreen, the actors that play them are often gorgeous.

It's time to give the stars who play TV's dowdiest and dorkiest another look. You won't be disappointed. Get ready for some sexy surprises! Following are what 10 dowdy TV actors look like in real life.

  • Hamish Linklater in 'The New Adventures of Old Christine'

On The New Adventures of Old Christine, Linklater played oddball Matthew Kimble, a perenially single and sarcastic man-boy who lives with his sister and her son. The shaggy-haired needy slacker is definitely not an eligible bachelor.

Hello, hottie! Linklater has starred on sitcoms The Crazy Ones, The News Room, and The Big C. He's slated to play the lead in TV Land's new show I Shudder. Offscreen, the coupled-up Linklater is a prominent Shakespearean actor.

  • Kevin McHale in 'Glee'

Dorky V-necks and glasses do not a TV hunk make. As lovable but nerdy Artie on Glee, McHale leaves the lady killing to William McKinley High's football team, even though he does briefly date fellow singers Tina and Brittany.

McHale's TV star good looks are much easier to spot when he's not "gleeking" it up. The actor is rumored to be the best dancer in Glee's cast and was in boy band NLT for six years before scoring the role of Artie.

  • Kunal Nayyar in 'The Big Bang Theory'

As homely Raj Koothrappali on The Big Bang Theory, Nayyar fully embraces his inner geek. The awkward astrophysicist is so shy he can't even speak when he's around the fairer sex.

The Indian actor is easy on the eyes, not too mention intelligent and well-rounded. Nayyar has a degree in business and a master's degree in fine arts. Handsome, smart, and employed — the whole package!

  • Jaleel White in 'Family Matters'

As Family Matters' annoying neighbor Steve Urkel, White set the standard for nerds back in the 1990s. Urkel's oversized glasses, mismatched clothes, and squeaky "Did I do that?" voice won laughs, but no ladies.

White is much bettter looking — and a whole lot smoother — than his alter ego, and he proved it with a turn on Dancing With the Stars in 2012. The actor has guest-starred on shows such as Castle, Hawaii Five-O, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

  • Wilmer Valderrama in 'That '70s Show'

Valderrama's over-the-top performance as foreign exchange student Fez on That '70s Show got plenty of laughs, but his sex-obsessed character didn't score much action. The naive Fez isn't fluent in English nor in the language of love.

The suave star is much cooler and better looking than his '70s alter ego. Valderrama appeared in From Dusk Until Dawn and voiced the main character in the cartoon Handy Manny for several years. The actor dates pop star Demi Lovato and may pop the question soon.

  • Jason Lee in 'My Name is Earl'

Lee scruffed it up big time to play a disheveled small-time crook who tries to right his wrongdoings after winning the lottery in My Name is Earl. The character was so busy cleaning up his act, he seemed to skip haircuts and shaving.

The sexy but modest former pro skateboarder won a cult following with early movies Chasing Amy and Almost Famous before scoring big with Earl, Raising Hope, and other hit sitcoms. Lee and his wife have two children and he also has a son, Pilot Inspektor (yep you read that right), from a former relationship.

  • Tony Hale in 'Arrested Development'

Mama's boy! As Buster Bluth on Arrested Development, Hale is socially awkward, prone to panic attacks, and super dependent on his mommy dearest. Steer clear!

Hale is much more attractive without his character's neuroses. The easy-on-the-eyes actor has also starred on Veep and Sanjay and Craig. He's married and has a daughter.

  • Rob Lowe in DirecTV ads

How low can he go? The actor aimed for rock bottom as dowdier versions of himself in last spring's DirecTV ads. (Suave Lowe opted for DirecTV, the lame Lowe characters chose regular cable.) The awful transformations left the actor and author almost unrecognizable -- and super unattractive.

Still hot after all these years! The 1980s teen heartthrob hasn't lost his St. Elmo's Fire. Lowe recently starred in Parks and Recreation and Californication.

  • Jake Johnson in 'New Girl'

Hygiene? Too expensive. As New Girl's resident slob Nick Miller, Johnson showers occasionally, sweats profusely, and lives in sweats, T-shirts, and plaid. The stubborn and sarcastic character is also always short on cash.

He showers! Johnson is a major cutie offscreen. The married actor showed off his chops in Jurassic World, Let's Be Cops, The Lego Movie, and plays a starring role in Digging for Fire, out now.

  • Anthony Head in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'

Oh, the tweed! As Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Head suited up as a stereotypical stuffy librarian, complete with bookish glasses and his trademark "tsk-tsk" noise.

Nothing to shush here! The multi-talented Head just keeps getting sexier with age. The veteran British singer and actor's other credits include The Iron Lady and TV's Merlin. He and his long-time partner, Sarah Fisher, have two kids.
