'The Vampire Diaries' Recap: Caroline Does Something Super Evil for a Good Reason

The Vampire Diaries is back, and it's like the cruel, cruel mid-season hiatus never happened. There's oodles going on (per usual) and a story-line for fans of every kind to sink their teeth into (vamp pun totally intended because I am a professional writer). But I think it's safe to say that the most gut-wrenching moment this week was Caroline Forbes' incorrect belief that her vampire blood can save her mother from the ravages of cancer -- when in fact, it's her vamp blood that could be Liz Forbes' undoing! Nooooo Mama Forbes! Whhhhhhhhhhy?!

I gotta say, I know that no adult is safe on this show, and I can normally accept that as reality provided I get to take solace in Ian Somerhalder's cheekbones -- but the sheriff is the greatest and I am not ready to let her go. Suffice to say, I get where Caroline's coming from.

I think it was beyond eye-roll-worthy that the writers of the show made the hasty decision to create a rule dictating that while vampire blood is an apparent cure-all when it comes to every single ailment ever, it CAN'T cure cancer. Stabbed in the face? Cured by vamp blood. Body half eaten by a mythical Manticore? It hasn't happened on the show, yet could conceivably work. But cancer? That's a big ol' nope. I mean, what?! LAME! I don't blame Caroline at all for sharing my stance -- of course she was going to do everything in her power to try and save her mother. That said, brutally experimenting on a man in the final stages of cancer was pretty dark and definitely not something her mom would agree with.

The reveal in the final few moments that her blood DIDN'T actually cure the guy had me leaping from my seat to slap the classy teacup of blood out of her mom's hand. Unfortunately, because they live inside my television, I could not prevent her from ingesting the stuff. If we are not going to be presented with the panacea of Caroline finally hooking up with Stefan any time soon, can we at least keep her mom alive so she has a shoulder to cry on?

What do you think will happen to her mom?
