'American Horror Story: Freak Show' Premiere Recap: OMG CLOWNS, NO

american horror story freak show

Tuning into Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's annual mini-series of perverted delights starring their repertoire company headed by leading lady Jessica Lange, you never know what, exactly, you are going to get. I'm talking about American Horror Story: Freak Show, of course. In the past we've had Dylan McDermott's butt, a rape-y gimp-suit wearing ghost, Kathy Bates as an evil ghost-slaver, Sarah Paulson getting trapped in an asylum, and a wealth of other splendors. Suffice to say, whatever the show dishes up is going to disturb and discomfit you, sometimes managing to tell a compelling story along the way.

I've got to say, this season is off to a killer start -- pun not intended, but now that it's out in the open, I refuse to take it back because IT IS BRILLIANT. While the show has a lot of other AHHH-factors (totally a legitimate term) going for it this season, here's what's got me totally freaked out: The clown on a murder and kidnapping spree. I. Just. Can't.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I know both myself and my roommate (with whom I watched the premiere) have an intense "thing" about clowns. This is probably because we are children of the '80s who probably saw It way, way, way too young. In fact, my roommate didn't even make it all the way through the Tim Curry-starring horror flick. I did, and verily did it haunt my nightmares.

The makeup, film-work, and scenic design were all in place to make even the not-clown-phobic viewers squirm in their seats with discomfort. The grubby clothing of the hulking clown, the stains -- were they blood? -- that covered his clothes, his refusal to speak, and, you know, HIS INSANE STABBING MURDERS all made for a terrifying B-story-line that will definitely have me coming back for more and probably sleeping with my lights on for the foreseeable future as well as avoiding an invitation to the circus.

What did you think of the first episode?
