'19 Kids & Counting' Recap: Jim Bob Duggar Reveals the 1 Thing Every Son-in-Law Should Know

Jessa Duggar

This week on 19 Kids & Counting, Jim Bob Duggar focused all of his matchmaking attention on Ben Seewald and his daughter Jessa Duggar. With Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard already planning their wedding, Jim Bob's attention is now on Jessa and Ben all the time. That's very easy now that Ben is living and working for the Duggars. Tonight, Jim Bob put Ben to the test. If you ask me, that's a small price to pay in exchange for free food, lodging, and easy access to your beloved -- with a chaperone, of course.

While the other Duggars had a fairly relaxing day, John David Duggar put Ben to work. It quickly became apparent that while Ben definitely has his skills (he seems like a kind and patient dude), being a natural Mr. Fix-It doesn't seem to be one of them. Luckily, he's got a great group of teachers sure to help him up his home improvement skills. That's important, because being a master of DIY is the biggest requirement Jim Bob has for a future son-in-law.

It's very cool to watch Jim Bob's master-plan play out! Phrasing it that way makes it sound like I'm accusing Jim Bob of having sinister motives, but that's not true in the slightest. When it comes to his daughters, Jim Bob has very strong ideas about what it takes to provide for them. He's taking this opportunity to SHOW Ben that rather than have it come up as a conflict between them later on down the road.

When you think about it, that's pretty ingenious parenting. Rather than form a son-in-law/father-in-law relationship predicated on that cliche of awkwardness and fear, he's welcoming Ben into the family by showing him just what all is expected of him -- and he's doing it lovingly. From the looks of it and from his eagerness (even in the face of a few slip-ups), I'd say that Ben is 100 percent on board.

Do you get along with your in-laws?
