George R. R. Martin Teases Major Deaths in 'Game of Thrones'

Game of Thrones fans are going through some serious withdrawal lately. Like the bad, shaky, hallucination-inducing kind. There is no more season 4. There are no new A Song of Ice and Fire books to read. And then we get this news during the "offseason" that author George R. R. Martin may kill everyone off in the last books of the series. Great.

Earlier this week, George talked about his creative process in front of a live audience. His first, perhaps most important advice for young writers? "Stay anonymous." Makes sense, considering fans are borderline obsessed with this series and analyze his every move and keep asking if he's going to finish up the books before he kicks the bucket (seriously).

But then he dropped this major bombshell:

The way my books are structured, everyone was together, then they all went their separate ways and the story deltas out like that, and now it’s getting to the point where the story is beginning to delta back in, and the viewpoint characters are occasionally meeting up with each other now and being in the same point at the same time, which gives me a lot more flexibility for killing people.

"More flexibility for killing people"?? Considering all the major characters George has killed so far, I guess this isn't too surprising to hear, but it's still scary when it comes directly from the author himself. Who is he preparing to off? Will it be as shocking and surprising and devastating as the Red Wedding? Could fans handle a scene where Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and Jon Snow get killed off all at the same time?

The answer to that is no. No we cannot.

So, following that logic, let's look at 5 characters good ol' George absolutely cannot kill (sorry, I already named three). They may be obvious, but come on -- did you really expect *cough cough* to be beheaded in the first book?? I think not. But George should definitely find a place to hide if he dares to kill off any of these characters.

1. Tyrion Lannister

tyrion lannister

The obvious fan favorite, but so many people in Westeros want him dead, this could be the death that floors us all. He's escaped it so many times and pissed so many people off -- but George couldn't do that to us, could he??? There's not much more to say about this one. I don't even like thinking about it.

2. Daenerys Targaryen

Considering Dany is still seen as a threat to take over the throne, a lot of powerful men want her dead. And her dragons are getting too big for her to control. And things are getting out of control at Slaver's Bay. Perhaps this is all leading up to a final gory end for our beloved Mother of Dragons? That'd be cray.

3. Jon Snow

jon snow

Lots of "offseason" drama about Jon Snow and his true parentage. But it's asking quite a lot of fans to get so invested in this character and his murky history only to kill him off. But considering he is so damn likable, a competent warrior, a big pile of mush for Ghost, very smart, very honorable, and very good-looking, George may take great glee in eliminating Snow in what would be one of the most shocking moves to date (book readers are waiting with bated breath to see Jon's fate too).

4. Arya Stark

arya stark

Our favorite badass mini assassin has kept the Stark name alive in more ways than one. Book readers know what happens when Arya sails away to Braavos, and she is still alive in The Winds of Winter. Fingers crossed she can live through the entire series!

5. Brienne of Tarth

Okay, okay, this last one was a bit hard to decide (Sansa and Jaime were also up there), but considering what happens to her at the end of A Feast for Crows, there was a real possibility that Brienne could meet an untimely end. She had some amazing moments last season on the TV version with Podrick Payne, an incredible fight with the Hound, and helps keep Catelyn Stark's memory and honor alive. Hell, she even made Jaime likable after he threw a kid out of a tower. Her death wouldn't be nearly as riot-causing as the first four, but it'd still majorly suck.

Do you think George would ever kill off any of these characters? Who is your favorite?
