Lea Michele Joins 'Sons of Anarchy,' Continuing Most Bizarre Casting Streak

Lea MicheleSons of Anarchy gets snubbed at the Emmys every year, but even if the seventh and final season receives zero nominations for best series, acting, or writing, I hope someone creates a brand-new category called "weirdest casting" so SoA can finally take home an award. If I were given unlimited time, access to IMDB.com, and a case of 5-Hour Energy, I couldn't have possibly come up with the names associated with the show lately, which have included Courtney Love (what?), Marilyn Manson (whaaaaaaat?), and now Lea Michele (okay, they're messing with us, right?).

Lea Michele seems like a particularly eyebrow-raising choice, and it's not clear why the news didn't go public at Comic-Con last week, but Michele herself tweeted the announcement yesterday afternoon. I'm not sure what's more surprising, the character she'll be playing -- or the way she described the show.

Michele will be appearing as a guest star for one episode only, according to her tweet:

Okay, it's not like I know her personally or anything, but does anyone else find it totally random that wholesome Lea Michele's favorite show is Sons of Anarchy? Although she won't be playing a biker babe (or one of the show's many prostitutes), she's cast as Gertie, “an empathetic truck-stop waitress and single mother who connects with Gemma (Katey Sagal) during a difficult time.”

Sons has always done a great job of making me feel for Gemma even after she's done something horrible, but after the season 6 finale -- Gemma, in the kitchen, with the carving fork! -- I'm not sure that I'll easily be empathizing alongside Gertie. It sounds like Lea Michele's got some heavy lifting for that episode, and it'll be interesting to see how she does.

In digging into this story a bit more, I learned that Glee director Paris Barclay is SoA's executive producer and principal director, so I guess this decision isn't completely out of left field. But can anyone explain the addition of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, forever known to me as Theo Huxtable? I'm telling you, I wouldn't be surprised if the next casting announcement welcomes Britney Spears, Quentin Tarantino, and the dog from Air Bud.

What do you think of Lea Michele guest starring on Sons of Anarchy? Can you picture her in this role?
