'Are You the One?' Recap: Shanley's Mistake Is an All-Too Common Dating Fail

Real talk here: dating in the digital world is hard. Between the countless new matchmaking apps and the horribly awkward blind dates, finding your perfect match is prettttty rough.

Enter MTV's stellar new show, Are You the One? (and cue memories of fabulous dating shows locked in the MTV reality programming vault: Date My MomRoom Raiders, Next). The newest entry into the dating reality show genre has 20 hot 20-somethings living in a house in Hawaii, all of them on a mission to find their one true perfect match. If all 10 pairs match up in the 10 weeks of the show, they all split a $1 million prize.

Not too shabby for a summer of drinking, partying, and promiscuity.

Part Real World and part Bachelor Pad, Are You the One? gives fans some drama-filled love triangles, hilarious "challenges" for fun date prizes, a chance to watch contestants test their matches in "the match booth," and constant hookups for their viewing pleasure. I mean, what else do you expect when 20 coeds get together to play a 20-way game of spin the bottle and it's only the second week?

In Tuesday night's second episode, the claws were out. After contestants Shanley and Chris T. learned last week they weren't a perfect match (thanks to the oh-so-wonderful match booth), they weren't exactly ready to move on. Oh MTV gods and your true love algorithms, how magical and heart-wrenching you can be.

Yup: Shanley just could NOT move on from her week one love. Paige picked Chris as her partner, and dear ol' Shan chimed in with some "that's my man out there" commentary. Because it's totally natural to know a guy for maybe 48 hours and immediately feel the lust looooooove.

Heck, we've all been there. Sometimes you meet someone and you think they're Mr. Right just because of that immediate spark. And when things go south and you find he's not exactly the dreamboat you hoped him to be (read: he never speaks to his parents, WHAT?!), it's hard to move on when you believe there's something there.

The reality? Being with someone long-term is about more than just chemistry. It's about what kind of person they are, what kind of family they came from, what they do for a living -- the whole nine yards. Sure, he may be nice to look at for a while, but if you're looking for the one to spend the rest of your life with, you gotta think bigger picture. The whole picture.

I, for one, can't wait to see what happens next (and hope Shanley moves on). With four of the couples correctly pairing off this week, the love matches are starting to heat up. And lucky us -- the eventual feuds and lovelorn moments are forming along with them!

Have you ever had trouble moving on from a partner, knowing full well you're not compatible long-term?
