'Bachelorette' Desiree Hartsock Gets Bombarded by 'Sob Stories' in the Worst Way

Desiree HartsockThe Bachelor franchise is famous for "sob stories" and Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock's season is no different. Since the people are there for such a short amount of time, they seem to think sharing everything about their lives that was sad, unfair, or difficult will somehow keep them in the house and a rose in their hands. What they don't seem to know is that this idea often backfires.

Yes, even in a world of magical dates and incessant good times, a girl still needs to have things develop in an organic, normal way. There is nothing normal about talking about your most intense lifetime pain on the first date.

Let's review, shall we? Of the men in the house, about 15 have a "hook" or some kind of depressing tale (replete with sad music) that make Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock tilt her little head and sigh. "That must have been so hard for you." Here are some of the most egregious:

  • Brooks: Brooks did really well on the date until he started talking about what marriage means to him. In his defense, Des asked. But still. No one needed to hear (cue the sad music) about how he forgot what his father looked like. It's sad and all, but it isn't first date material.
  • Ben: Ben is playing it well by not making his son a "sob" story, per se. He keeps talking the kid and his relationship with the mom up. But most of us can tell this is a ploy to look as good as possible in Desiree's eyes, and insanely (because, come ON girl!) it seems to be working. The whole "I am just a loving daddy who is here for the right reasons" actually works? I thought that was old by now.
  • Brandon: Brandon is cute and rugged, but he is young (26) and also constantly has a look on his face like he may boil Desiree's bunny if she doesn't fall in love with him. Monday night, he led with "my father left me and I raised my younger siblings and had no childhood." You could tell Des was put off by his WAY too early admission, but she had to smile and be nice because the guy just told her he had no childhood. Sigh. What a manipulation. I mean, I feel bad for him, but can't we have appetizers before the therapy session?
  • Bryden: Bryden was in a terrible car accident. It's pretty awful. No doubt about that. But he brought PHOTOS to their FIRST date. He was also weird and awkward throughout the hot tub scene, but it was his going on and on about the accident in such a dramatic fashion that felt a little staged. By all means, mention it quickly. Say it changed your life. But PHOTOS?! A 10-minute spiel? I am thinking that was designed for maximum rose potential.
  • Michael G.: He has type-one diabetes. It's terrible. It's scary. It's debilitating. But it isn't "pull you aside during the cocktail party and tell you all about it" material. Still, that's just what Michael did.

Maybe try some uplifting stories guys? Show her how positive and fun you are BEFORE you break out the "OMG my life has been so hard" tales. Just a thought.

Did you think there were too many sob stories last night?
