'Game of Thrones' Season 3 Will Be Longer & Hopefully Even More Awesome

Game of ThronesWho's counting down the days until the season 3 premiere of Game of Thrones? I know I am, and there's only ... uh, carry the 5 ... reverse the denumerator ... okay, whatever, I suck at math, but the point is that the show premieres on March 31, which is totally not that far away. And as if its growing proximity isn't awesome enough, there's even better news: when Game of Thrones comes back next year, it will be SUPER-SIZED.

That's right: bigger. Longer. Thicker. More ... girth, as befitting a show with an infamous love of nudity. Specifically, there will be a few extra minutes in each episode, creating almost another full episode’s worth of time spread across the season.

In other words, in the game of DVR'ing this show, YOU ADD EXTRA MINUTES OR YOU DIE.

There are still 10 episodes in the upcoming third season, but instead of being around 52 minutes long, each will be 56 or 57 minutes. According to showrunner Dan Weiss,

One of the great liberties with HBO is we’re not forced to come in at a specific time. We can’t be under 50 minutes or over 60, but that gives us a lot of flexibility.

HBO also released a statement about the change, saying,

All 10 episodes gained a minute or two from past seasons with the finale very possibly exceeding 60 minutes.

Yup, the third season finale is expected to run over an hour, so make sure your TiVo is all primed for the upcoming awesomeness, because how much would it blow if your DVR cut away in the final moments to record, like, Real Housewives of Wherever the Hell? Just saying.

As for what extra fantasy-world goodness we might get with these extra minutes, there are some teasers out there, but no one knows for certain. We do know that season 3 will take on the first half (ish) of author George R.R. Martin’s A Storm of Swords novel, but other than that ... more heads on a spike? More bouncing hooters? More hateful moments with Joffrey? More withering smackdowns from Tyrion? More insanely freaky White Walkers?

All we can count on is that it won't be filled with happy endings. As the show's co-executive producer said once,

George (Martin) is a savage god and he does terrible things to his characters.

Can't. WAIT.

Are you excited to hear that season 3 of Game of Thrones will be longer than normal?
