American 'Downton Abbey' Is Happening: Let the Casting Rumors Begin!

downton abbeyI'm so excited about my favorite PBS series, Downton Abbey, going stateside! No, I don't mean Season 3 finally airing in January -- though I'm dying over that, too. I mean the plans for an NBC series by Downton creator Julian Fellows -- The Gilded Age. Daaahling, it will be simply sensational, I'm sure!

Now of course it's not going to just be Downton USA. Gilded will take place in the 1880s, not the early 20th century. But I can't help fantasizing about the cast -- and who the American counterparts might be if Fellows uses his UK cast as inspiration. Might there be a grand old dame? A handsome young bachelor? A rebellious daughter? Dear Julian, I DO hope you'll consult me for your casting. Here's a few ideas to get you started!

Handsome rich bachelor (Matthew): Alexander Skarsgard (duh), Ryan Gosling, James Van Der Beek, Justin Timberlake (I have to add both those guys or certain Stir writers will be angry with me).

Beautiful unmarried oldest daughter in danger of having nothing (Mary): Ginnifer Goodwin, Amanda Seyfried, Leighton Meester.

Tradition-bound butler (Mr. Carson): Steve Carell, Eric Stonestreet, Woody Harrelson.

Intimidating housekeeper (O'Brien or Mrs. Hughes): Amy Poehler, Julie Bowen, Jessica Lange.

Intimidating grand dame (Dowager Countess): Kathy Bates, Betty White, Barbra Streisand.

Rebellious youngest daughter (Sybil): Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lawrence, Aubrey Plaza (Aubrey! Aubrey! Aubrey!).

Maid with a heart of gold (Anna): Rashida Jones, Nancy Travis, Claire Danes.

Valet with a past (Bates): Damian Lewis, Jon Cryer, Jack Black.

Robber baron (American invention): Alec Baldwin obviously, George Clooney, Louis CK.

Robber baron's wife, and maybe she's foreign (Cora): Tina Fey, Sofia Vergara, Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Okay, yeah, I've kind of cast this as a comedy. I guess that's why Julian Fellows isn't responding to all my emails.

Who would you like to see in The Gilded Age?
