'Walking Dead' Season 3 Preview Leaves Us Slobbering Zombie Style

Michonne Walking DeadIt turns out that while I was barbecuing, playing in rivers, and repeatedly subjecting my children to the indignity of sunscreen, I was missing out on an entire season 3 preview of The Walking Dead that aired on AMC this weekend.

Not that I have any regrets about choosing summer activities over huddling in front of the TV watching all 19 episodes of the previous seasons (hey look, everyone's looking for Sophia again!) along with the show's companion talk show, The Talking Dead, but thanks to the magic of the Internet, I can easily see what I missed.

First things first: let's talk about MICHONNE. We already got a glimpse of The Governor, and now AMC has released an exclusive first-look scene of actress Dania Gurira in full Michonne Mode. If you're not familiar with the comic books, you may remember her as the mysterious cloaked figure that appeared in the season 2 finale.

Aaaaaaand this is where I DID have a clip of Michonne in action, but for some inexplicable reason, AMC pulled the video -- you know, the same video they aired this weekend. Hey, who needs free marketing, right? 50 seconds of Michonne dispatching zombies should be kept under LOCK AND KEY, by golly.

Anyway, it showed Michonna killing some -- whatever. The point is, Michonne and her katana sword are going to be seriously fun to watch in the upcoming season.

For the comics fans, Robert Kirkman has said that that we can expect plenty of similarities between onscreen Michonne and the graphic novel version -- and a few differences:

The essence of the character — her personality, her motives, everything that makes Michonne Michonne — remains intact from the comics. But like a lot of things on the show, there will be little tweaks and differences here and there. We saw that her introduction is slightly different from how it was in the comic, and her interaction with Andrea is really going to be a really cool addition to the character that I think will get television viewers up to speed, and they’ll get to know her a lot faster than comic book readers did.

As for a few other tidbits about what we can expect in season 3:

The Governor will be a big deal, obvs. According to producer Glen Mazzara,

The Governor is a guy who believes that this zombie apocalypse is all about him. That somewhere down the road history's going to look back and there was one guy who kept the light on, who kept humanity going ... he thinks he's the messiah.

Carl may be less annoying, thank god. Young actor Chandler Riggs, who plays Carl, said,

(Carl) is growing up, he's definitely not a kid anymore ... no more crying or being told to get in the house. He's more of a soldier now, he's more a part of the group now.

Good. Because cheese and crackers, that kid has been two season's worth of suck.

The weaponry will be epic. Props manager John Sanders ended up showing off some of the weapons that will be featured in season 3 -- including a machine gun and a ROCKET LAUNCHER.

The prison will also be epic. The big location for season 3 is a prison, and according to Kirkman, it's going to look REALLY AWESOMELY PRISON-Y.

It looks absolutely amazing. They are shooting the hell out of this prison. It just looks absolutely stunning, and I think when people start seeing trailers and stuff for this season, I think people are just gonna be like, “Wait, what? This is what? I can’t believe this is a TV show!” It’s really creepy, really moody and it’s just gonna be really awesome.

(Um, okay, I am feeling the enthusiasm and all but aren't we still talking about a prison here? I mean, it's not freaking Avatar, for god's sake.)

Things are going to kick into high gear. Steven Yeun, who plays Glenn, dropped a hint that the balls-out action that redeemed the end of season 2 will return in season 3. Well, at least I'm assuming that's what his statement that "It's just gonna get more nuts" means. Although wouldn't it be awesome if he meant that in the premiere episode, Lori gets chowed by a zombie?

What do you think of the teasers for season 3 of The Walking Dead? Are you looking forward to it?
