Carrie Underwood & Steven Tyler Set High Bar for Super Bowl Halftime (VIDEO)

Carrie Underwood and Steven Tyler Last night in Indianapolis before hordes of anxious Super Bowl fans, two of American Idol's biggest names took the stage together to get the party started. Country superstar Carrie Underwood and infamous rocker and Idol judge, Steven Tyler, teamed up to blend their sounds and styles for a phenomenal performance that aired live on CMT's Crossroads last night.

Tyler got blasted a few weeks back for his performance of the National Anthem at the game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens. I happened to like that performance quite a bit, but he and Carrie together were even better. Despite a small technical problem that interrupted their performance briefly, they are such a great mix of old and new, twang and rock, and it just works. Here they are singing her song "Before He Cheats." See what you think.

I'm fans of both performers, so I may not be the most objective, but I think that's pretty powerful. And I love that she grew up with him as a musical idol and now she's up there singing with him. In a promo that aired before the show, she said of Tyler:

I remember as a very small child, I could pick your voice out. Even then, you know that it's different, you know that it's special and can pick it out from a million other voices. You were definitely part of what gave me that musical, laid-back, in-the-pocket sensibility on albums and stuff like that.

Here they are combining one of his classic songs, "Dream On," with her hit, "Just a Dream."

I think they set the bar pretty high for this year's Super Bowl entertainment. Let's hope that Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and the rest of the performers give us something equally as impressive at half time.

What do you think of Carrie Underwood's performance with Steven Tyler? Do you think Madonna and Nicki Minaj will do better?
