Harry Belafonte Deserves a Nap (VIDEO)

Harry BelafonteDespite all the amazing stuff Harry Belafonte has done as of late and throughout his life, the one thing that has everyone buzzing is a video of him supposedly falling asleep before a news interview. Early last Friday while he was waiting to go on live with California station KBAK, he closed his eyes for a bit ... and didn't open them when the reporter tried to rouse him.

Said the giggling reporter: "Hey, good morning Harry! Wake up, wake up! This is your wake-up call! OK, I'll tell you what, he's meditating. He's taking a little nap." Then, unable to get him to respond, they proceeded to laugh at him. Check out the video, which has, of course, gone viral:

Turns out what really happened is that Harry did close his eyes to rest, or meditate as his spokesperson says, but he wasn't that out of it -- he just couldn't hear her because the equipment failed. It could have happened to anyone, but because of his age or status or just because people are mean, it was used to embarrass him.

As Harry's rep said:

Mr. Belafonte is 84 years young, but sharper and more awake than most who have been interviewing him. Maybe the world would be a better place if more people took a moment to meditate.

Indeed. But even if he really was sleeping, who cares? I close my eyes anywhere and everywhere I can these days to make up for lost sleep. And Harry is 84 -- more than twice my age! Not to mention he's as active as they get. He just released a new memoir, My Song, which he's been promoting all over, and he's been touting the Occupy Wall Street protests. He's been an amazing performer (check him out here singing with Stephen Colbert earlier this week), activist, and inspiration throughout his life, and if anyone deserves a nap, it's Harry. So let's put this whole thing to rest.

Do you think it matters whether Harry Belafonte was sleeping before his interview or not?
