The ShiningAs Halloween nears, we're in full fear mode. We love to see how much can we freak ourselves out and how much we can we freak others out. There's just something about fear that's irresistible and makes this season crackle with anticipation and excitement.

One of the best ways to fuel the fear is through horror movies. The scenes and characters from the truly great ones we've seen over the years are those that stick with us and provide fodder for nightmares for years to come. So if you're looking to get really freaked, here are seven of the scariest movies of all time.

1. The Shining

This is one I've honestly never been able to make it all the way through with both eyes open. Jack Nicholson is just too convincing in his role, and I avoid room 237 in any hotel I stay in and always will. They just don't get much scarier than this one.

2. Cujo

Really, what could be more terrifying than a rabid St. Bernard? I'm not sure I've ever completely looked at the dogs in the same way after seeing this.

3. Children of the Corn

Living in Nebraska when this one came out, I was terrified. Malachi still shows up in my nightmares sometimes.

4. The Omen

This one has had staying power over the years since it was released in 1976 because it's just that frightening. Damien!

5. The Exorcist

Possessed children may be scarier than anything else. Perhaps that's because after all the toddler tantrums we witness as parents they seem pretty realistic?

6. It

I never liked clowns to begin, but Stephen King sealed the deal in this film with "Pennywise the Dancing Clown." I will do everything in my power to make sure my children don't see this film.

7. Poltergeist

I still get nervous when television screens start getting fuzzy. It was one of the first horror movies I ever saw, and it sufficiently freaked me out for years.
