'Sons of Anarchy' Season 4: Will You Be Watching?

I'm a newcomer to FX's Sons of Anarchy, having just started it this year in Season 3. Sons, for those who aren't familiar, is basically a biker-gang drama that focuses on the lives of a close-knit outlaw motorcycle club operating in Charming, a fictional town in Northern California. The show centers on protagonist Jackson "Jax" Teller and the surrounding club members and side-plots.

This season—warning, spoilers ahead!—was centered around an endless search for Jax's son, Abel, kidnapped by the True Irish Republican Army. Why the kidnapping occurred in the first place is a total effing mystery if you didn't see the previous season, as is a few other key pieces of information like who Abel's mother was. (Luckily, this is what Wikipedia is for.)

There were some interesting goat-trails that occurred along the way, but really, a whole season trying to find this baby. I have to say, it was hard to maintain interest in the fate of this child after a while—and when Jax finally, FINALLY clapped eyes on him again ... well. Not only was it anticlimactic, but the storyline did a brief flirtation with Jax choosing to leave the baby with a pair of adoptive parents, which might have felt more realistic if he hadn't been frantically trying to get his son back for A WHOLE SEASON.

I do like a lot of things about this show. In general I'm a big fan of the casting: I like Jax's mother Gemma, who's played by Katey Sagal (of Married With Children fame); I like Tig, whose commentary about his supposedly epically-sized penis is always entertaining; I always like seeing Ron Perlman even though he's a one-trick pony in this show; I like most of club members and personalities.

I'm less fond of Tara, Jax's love interest, and Jax himself. His eternally brooding character in this season got tiresome, and while I do appreciate the startling amazingness that is Jax unclothed, I very much hope we see more variety from him in the next season.

As for Season 4, we do know it's coming, because FX renewed Sons for 13 more episodes. It's predicted to begin in Fall 2011, by which time I hope we are ALL DONE with missing babies and can move on to more interesting things.

Did you watch Sons of Anarchy this year? Are you looking forward to Season 4?
