Jessica Pare: Who Is Mad Men's Megan?

(If you haven't watched last night's Mad Men, beware: spoilers ahead!)

I don't know what I was expecting in the Mad Men season finale, but I could have made a thousand guesses without ever coming up with the image of Don handing over a diamond ring to his secretary.

Oh, Don. You unbelievable asshole, you.

So, who plays the gorgeous-but-toothy Megan? Her name is Jessica Paré, and she's a Canadian film and television actress (ah, that explains the immaculate French, then). She's 27 years old and had a role—oddly enough—in Hot Tub Time Machine.

Paré did a Q&A with AMC on becoming Don's fiancee and "breaking the curse of the Draper girlfriend," and she seems as sweet and naive as her character.

People are going to have a lot of opinions on whether Don and Megan are a good match. Do you think they are?

I think so, and maybe it's because I'm hopeful for Megan and Don, but I think she's got a really natural, nurturing warmth to her, and I think he responds to that because, as he says in the finale, I feel like myself when I'm with you, but the me that I want to be. And that's a really good place to be with a partner.

Are they a good match? Sure, I guess so, as long as it's a good match for Don to fantasize that she's the one who can sweep all his darkness under the rug; seamlessly become the dream wife who never challenges him, questions his past, or has actual human emotions; and doesn't mind him slipping the old Draper in-and-out to about ten thousand other women.

Not that I'm, uh, overly caught up in the characters of this show, or anything.

Jessica sounds like she was pretty much as surprised as the rest of us about where the storyline went, since she had no idea what the final script contained ahead of time. She did get a hint, though:

What does Megan's engagement ring look like up close?

It was beautiful, and it's real diamonds. Like 1.5 karats or something. The funny story about that is before I'd read the script, props had to measure me for a ring. So she came in and was like "I don't know how to do this without giving anything away, but we still have to do it." I didn't want to think about what it might mean. Until I read the script, I wasn't believing anything.

What do you think about Don and Megan as a couple? Were you bummed he didn't stay with Faye?
