'Pretty Little Liars' Recap: Homecoming, Hauntings, and Hotties, Oh My!

Pretty Little Liars

Oh no she (or he, or whatever that ghostly texting teen might be) didn't.

On Episode 6 of my new summer fave, Pretty Little Liars, A., the mysterious Gossip Girl from beyond the grave, gets uber-creative. So far this season, we've seen Jungle Red lipstick scrawled on a mirror, radio dedications, and even good old-fashioned snail mail.

It's homecoming week, and just as our pretty little clique of secret-keeping teens is starting to get back into their comfort zone, planning what to wear and whom to go with over Chinese food, A. sends a rather pointed reminder that all is not forgotten. Via fortune cookie. Yup, the girls all find they've got the same fortune -- and it's that A.'s still out for blood. Eeeps is right!

The girls seem surprisingly unfazed by all this. Guess it's hard to worry about being blackmailed by a dead BFF when you've got real problems to fret about.

Before I give you the scoop, is just me, or is that one hell of a fancy homecoming bash this high school throws (with nary a mention of an actual football game!)? I mean, they're really decked out to the nines for this carnivale-esque shindig, which offers a moody, appropriately threatening atmosphere. But really, I don't remember such fancy-pants homecomings around these parts. Anyway ...

Aria's (Lucy Hale) still trying to make up with her hottie English teacher Erza Fitz (Ian Harding), who thinks she's spilled about their secret hook-up to her friends because he saw a text from A. about their last dalliance. Plus, he's worried that he's taking her away from hanging with her friends and doing other teenager-y things.

Former loser Hanna (Ashley Benson) just wants to nab the crown -- which A. would have clearly taken, had she still been alive -- at homecoming and have a good time without any taunting, ghost-written threats. And she's sort of digging that geeky yearbook photographer kid she met at the purity club (which she joined to keep tabs on her virginity-oriented boyfriend). In the end she wins, naturally, but other things, uh, take precedence. More on that in a minute.

Meanwhile, Spencer (Troian Avery Bellisario) is on her first date with country club ball boy Lucas (Brendan Robinson), but her bitchy big sis -- although, guess Spence was asking for it by stealing her old history essay last week -- Melissa sabotages that whole thing by telling Lucas he's being used to piss off their pompous papa.

But she doesn't have time to go chasing after Lucas, because Hanna's discovered some evidence that points to outcast Toby (Keegan Allen) as the killer -- and he just happens to be Emily's (Shay Mitchell) date for the night. Uh oh. Yup, this is headed where you think it's headed. For one, it's totally pissing off Maya (Bianca Lawson). More importantly, if Toby's the killer -- and Emily knows his secret (hint: he was sleeping with his now-blind stepsister) -- he's got every incentive to strike again.

And that's where the episode leaves us, as Emily's on the run from Toby -- who I still think is probably not the killer. But then, who is? If you're watching, post your guesses below!

Things are about to get really down and dirty on Pretty Little Liars. I can't wait to see what happens next.
