Creative Gift for Kids: DIY Sensory Kit

When it comes to holidays and birthdays, my kids always seem to love the DIY gifts we come up with more than store-bought toys. With that in mind, I created this DIY Sensory Kit that includes my new book, 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids. Using just 15 commonly found items, you have the materials needed for half of the activities in the book. It makes a great birthday or holiday gift for kids (they can open it and start playing immediately) -- and teachers too.

If you'd like to put your own custom gift basket together -- here are some ideas.

For a DIY Sensory Kit for a child ages 0 to 3 years old: A copy of 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids and cornstarch, cornmeal, vegetable oil, gelatin, flax seeds, basil seeds, flour, spaghetti noodles, dried oats, rice, rice cereal (the powdered baby cereal kind).

Some material ideas for a DIY Sensory Kit for a 3- to 7-year-old (a child who is no longer tasting things): A copy of 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids and cornstarch, shaving cream, flour, cotton balls, cornmeal, vegetable oil, food coloring, colored craft foam sheets, dish soap, baking soda, vinegar, salt, gelatin, rice, spaghetti noodles, and contact paper.

And finally, a DIY Slime Kit would make a great gift for an older child, 4 to 10 years old. Unlike similarly priced make-your-own slime kits at the store, this kit produces much larger quantities of slime and also gives the recipe so children can make many different versions of slime instead of just one. Some material ideas for a DIY Slime Kit for a 4- to 10-year-old: a copy of 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids and one bottle of Sta Flo liquid starch, clear school glue, scented frosting creations packets (I use Duncan Hines), pom poms, food coloring, and glitter.
