'The Little Mermaid' Blu-Ray Release Takes a Whole New Generation Under the Sea (VIDEO)

The Little MermaidIn August I attended a Disney event for bloggers to celebrate the release of the diamond edition of The Little Mermaid on Blu-ray/DVD. It was an amazing trip in so many ways. We got to meet Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel (and even heard her sing!); we spoke to writers and directors -- John Musker and Ron Clements -- who brought the movie to life; and we got to see original sketches from the movie’s development.  My favorite part, however, was coming home and impressing my Ariel-obsessed 4-year-old daughter with all I had seen.

It was somewhere in the midst of all the excitement of the gifts I brought home that I said something about us needing to watch the movie again, when she informed me she’d never seen it. I was shocked, and assured her she was wrong. But then I got to thinking and searching our CD collection, and the fact was she was right. Somehow, she had never watched The Little Mermaid.

With all of our Ariel costumes, toys, and talk in our house, I’d just assumed she had, but she hadn’t.  She loved the movie … without ever seeing it.

Of course, we had to correct that.  I couldn’t wait until my copy of the new diamond edition on Blu-ray/DVD arrived, and once it did, we sat down and watched it together. She was in awe … almost as much as I was watching it again after all these years. She’s watched it countless times since … and we only just got it.

While it’s always great to run out and see the latest and greatest new film, it was so nice to share this old familiar favorite with her. And that’s what’s so cool about this re-release –  it introduces a new generation to this beloved story. There are also some pretty cool new bonus features included, like this live-action footage filmed for the movie, which long-time fans will enjoy as well.

Warning: After watching, be prepared to talk about nothing but mermaids and life under the sea incessantly for at least … well, I’ll let you know when (or if) it ever stops.

Have your children seen The Little Mermaid?
