The Most Awesome Toy Is Also the Most Dangerous

dangerous toyIt's holiday shopping time, everybody! When you're out there trying to find the hottest toys this season, it can be overwhelming. There are so many super fun kid toys that get released just in time for the holidays, ready to land under your tree, menorah, or wherever you place holiday gifts.

I always love finding unique and interesting presents for adults and kids alike, and this weekend some friends of ours introduced us to -- what I thought -- was one of the most super fun toys in the world. And now I've found out that the Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning against my new favorite thing: Buckyballs rare earth magnets. In fact, the CPSC reports injuries from Buckyballs are up this year, and these tiny balls are causing children serious issues.

There go my stocking stuffers.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't planning on buying Buckyballs for my toddler. The website clearly states these aren't for children. But I totally was going to get some for my husband, my friends, some other family members, and I would probably play with them for hours myself. After all, four adults sat around a table last Friday night mesmerized by the bizarro power of the Buckys. Honestly, it's fascinating stuff.

Sure I wondered about the safety of what we were doing, what with five children ages 2 to 5 in the next room. And I blanched for a minute when the 3-year-old insisted on playing with them. But I did know that this was such a thing that the government was issuing warnings against them since some children have required surgery after accidentally ingesting these little balls of fun.

And yes, I know magnets together in your intestines can cause damage. Of course I realize that kids put things in their mouths. Heck, we were pretending to have piercings all over ourselves and laughing hysterically at each other, what makes me think kids won't be doing the exact same thing? Apparently they do, and when you pretend to have a magnetic ball tongue piercing, swallowing happens.

So it's back to the drawing board for rad holiday gifts that are fun for adults as well as kids. Hopefully my great idea of getting some retro lawn darts will work out better than the Buckyballs of death.

Do you have Buckyballs?
