Toddler Tooth Care: Lollipops That May Help Prevent Cavities

xyli-tots lollies prevent cavitiesEating candy to prevent cavities certainly seems counterintuitive, but Carifree claims its Xyli-Tots Lollies will keep your child's teeth healthy.

That's important because according to the American Dental Association, 28 percent of all preschoolers between the ages of 2 and 5 suffer from tooth decay (children should begin getting regular dental checkups by their first birthday).

PSA done. Back to candy.

So what's up with the lollipops? CariFree’s Xyli-Tots sugar-free lollipops contain a "secret" ingredient: xylitol (it's FDA-approved).

According to the company,

"Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar substitute that targets cavity-causing bacteria and decreases acidity. The resulting neutralization and decrease of the harmful bacteria that cause the caries infection reduces the risk for cavities."

A quick look at the rest of the ingredients: Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate (HSH), Citric Acid, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Titanium Dioxide, Colors FD&C Blue 1, 2, Red 3, 40, Yellow 5, 6.

The Lollies come in 5 flavors (cherry, citrus, grape, lime, and raspberry). A bag of 24 ("12 doses") costs $12.50, and the company recommends a child has two lollipops a day (more if desired, but don't "exceed 20 Lollies per day").

The artificial flavors and dyes (also present in many toothpastes) are a big turn-off for me, so my daughter will be sticking with our all-natural toothpaste and good old-fashioned tooth brushing for now.

How about you? Would you give Xyli-Tots Lollies a try?
