A link showed up on my Facebook wall last week -- is this camera good for your daughter's birthday present?

She actually has several; a byproduct of being a photographer's daughter -- everyone figures it's the perfect present.

But with recent fears regarding sexting and privacy issues on Facebook, some parents are asking if it's safe to hand a toddler their own camera.

The answer?

Toddler age is just fine, says Dr. Gwenn Schurgin O'Keeffe, pediatrician and CEO of Pediatrics Now.

"Cameras can be very expressive," she says. "It's a fun way to capture your life."

Generally the coordination to take quality pictures won't come until close to second grade, but even toddlers love copying Mom and Dad.

The important topic to broach with any picture-taking tot is what makes an appropriate photo and when the camera should be put away. Laying out guidelines this early on is actually the first step to preventing sexting.
