But on the off chance he gets a sunburn this summer, follow these basic dos and don'ts to ensure a quick and comfy recovery.

Autism doesn't take a vacation. Literally. The dog days of summer have already arrived, at least where we live. The temps are stifling, most kids are out of school, and for many families, this time of year means at least one or two ritualistic trips out of town.

My family, on the other hand, hasn't been on a vacation since before my son Brody was born 4 years ago -- and the mere mention of the V word is enough to send me into anxiety overload.

Last weekend we went on a multi-family camping trip and while it was completely awesome, my baby did his part to make everything more complicated, dirtier and completely exhausting. It was still a fantastic time, but if I had to do it all over again I would change a few things, or at the least, not pack like I was going to the Holiday Inn instead of the wilderness.

I had the baby safe bug spray and sun protection, but unfortunately forgot a lot of other key elements for baby camping success.

Here’s what I learned from making rookie camping mistakes with my one-year-old:

I love me some vacation, but I don't love getting there. Whether we're flying or driving, the journey is the hardest part for my family. My 3 1/2-year-old gets bored easily. My 11-month-old doesn't sleep through the drives like he used to. They are sitting close enough to touch (pinch, prod, poke) each other. Four or five hours in the car with them can feel like FOREVER.
