My Kid's Lunch Is None of the Government's Business

lunch boxA four-year-old preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School in North Carolina opted to eat just three chicken nuggets from the school cafeteria after her own lunch was deemed ‘unhealthy’ by a state inspector.

The girl’s mother had packed her a sack lunch containing a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, potato chips, and apple juice. I’m impressed. My preschooler’s lunch usually consists of a tube of yogurt, a string cheese, Pirate’s Booty, and some sort of juice box. Kids are picky, and when she’s at school, my main concern is that she gets some sustenance. We fill in with grains, fruit, and veggies at home, because we’re her parents, and we have authority over our daughter and her diet.

3 Simple Rules for Feeling Full After Breakfast

hungry after breakfastWe all are very clued in that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yes? Yes. I love me some breakfast as well, but I can't help but notice it disappoints my actual body several times a week. Generally within an hour or two after eating, I'm starving. Like stomach rumbling, crazy cravings starving. In fact, I'm starving right now.

However, on the weekends when I have the opportunity to make an omelet or have a heartier breakfast, I'm good until mid-afternoon. The obvious answer here is that I need to eat more in the morning. The challenge, however, is how to do this when you're busy and ready to run out the door for school drop-off, then back to work, then the million other things you do during a day.

I know I'm not alone, because Google tells me so. After scouring the Internets, I found three ways to stop my crazy morning hunger pains and stay satiated. Hooray! Try this at home.

Is the Chipotle Burrito the iPhone of Fast Food?

chipotleLet me just start by saying I like Chipotle. I really, really like them. When it comes to premium Mexican-American fast food, I think they're the tops. And they're really trying to be the "good guys" of the fast food world. I love that. But is a Chipotle burrito like an iPhone? Come on, now. That's just crazy talk.

But somebody went there.

Last week in Slate, Matthew Yglesias compared Chipotle to Apple. Apple as in the company, not the food. He said, "In many ways, the Chipotle burrito is very similar to the iPhone." Look, I know iPhones. I use one every day. But the Chipotle burrito is no iPhone.

fast food burger and fries

There's nothing quite as American as fast food -- quick and easily accessible calorie-laden meals served with a giant bucket of soda to wash it all down. But a new survey of customers' top fast food restaurants revealed something surprising about our fast food preferences: Americans' favorite restaurants are decidedly un-American! See for yourself ...

Sure-Fire Way to Get Your Kid to Eat Veggies

trick kid eating vegetablesVegetables and kids do NOT go together as well as peas and carrots. At least in my house they don't. While the older one is starting to come around on some green things, the little one refuses unless it comes via muffin or Jamba Juice. So when I heard about this study that showed an increase in vegetable consumption, I decided to try it at home.

The Journal of American Medical Association held an experiment with 800 Minnesota grade schoolers. They observed these kindergarten, first, second, third, fourth, and fifth graders at lunch on a normal day. About a month later, they covered lunch trays with photos of carrots and green beans, which were the vegetables being served. More kids took more vegetables on those days than the non-photo tray day. Success!

So I tried it out on my six-year-old and her almost three-year-old little brother. Success?

Huge Egg Recall Will Put a Damper on Brunch

egg recall listeriaIf eggs are a staple in your diet (and really, they are impossible to avoid) you need to get on top of this egg recall information. Even though it doesn't seem like these are the eggs you pick up in your grocery store, if you go to school, eat in a cafeteria at your office, or have anyone you love who does -- you could be affected by this recall as a result of possible listeria contamination.

The Minnesota company, Michael Foods, has issued a recall for their eggs in brine sold in 10- and 25-pound pails for institutional use under the brand names: Columbia Valley Farms; GFS; Glenview Farms; Papetti's; Silverbrook; and Wholesome Farms. Don't eat another meal via an institution until you know where they came from. Especially if you live in the following states:

3 Ways to Eat Spam Without Guilt

Posted by April Peveteaux

spam recipesIf you eat meat, but still have great concerns about how animals are being treated before they wind up on your plate, this is great news. Hormel, the makers of SPAM, has signed on to eliminate most (most? let's try a little harder here, huh, Hormel?) gestation crates by the year 2017. While I wish it were sooner, and the pigs that are kept immobile in these crates wish it would just be illegal already, this is a terrific step forward for humanely raised meat. I mean, if SPAM can find a way to be more socially responsible, who can't?

Of course this doesn't mean SPAM will suddenly be better for you, even if the pigs are treated better and less likely to get disease. After all, it is kind of diabetes-in-waiting. But if you, like me, were raised by people who thought, "Hey, why not have SPAM for dinner?" you'll enjoy these three SPAM recipes with less guilt, starting in 2017.
