My two-year-old still sleeps in a crib, but I'm thinking it's almost time for a bed: She loves blankets and pillows and she's unlikely to fall out. Though it's likely she will get out of her own volition making going-to-bed time even more difficult than it already is. Sigh.
There's a conversation going on in Advice for Moms about the best age to move a kid from a crib to a bed and here's what people had to say:
I switched my son when he was potty training at two. — alientaxi
My daughter was 16 months and my son was two. I put them in twin beds not toddler beds. — hailnbray
I switched both of mine at 18 months—they were climbers. — BrandonsMom1000
I think cribs are dangerous and unnecessary. I made the bedroom as safe as possible, put the mattress on the floor, and then a gate at the door. — ChristineMom23
If your child is still doing fine in the crib then there's no need to rush her into a bed. — kali86
When did you switch your toddler from a crib to a bed? Did you use a toddler bed or a twin bed?

we need to switch our daugther, now 3, into a normal bed, mainly because i'm pregnant and i do not want to get another one but.... we are so tight in space we cannot really get her a bed or get her with us so we are still looking for a way to move her out of her crib so when the baby comes she will have a place to be =-/
My daughter was about 24 months. She was in a toddler bed for about a year and then we got her a twin. I wish we would have kept the toddler bed longer, she had SO much more space in her bedroom before we got the twin. We got the toddler bed at Goodwill for $30 with mattress. I wish we would have kept her in it for a while longer.
My oldest switched at 2. Someone gave us a toddler bed and we really needed the crib for our son who was 10 months and already too big for the pack n play.
Our son used the crib until he was 20 months and started climbing out. He went to a twin mattress on the floor (was already in his room) and the baby got the crib (she was 7 months at the time).
Our middle daughter used the crib from then until she was 4. At 2 1/2 we took the side off to convert it to a toddler bed. Both the older girls got junior beds from Ikea then (they were 6 and almost 4). They are longer then a toddler bed but a little narrower. They were cheap--$75 total for frame and mattress and we couldn't afford twin beds for them.
My youngest daughter never had a crib (the older kids broke it) so she slept in the pack-n-play until she was 23 months and outgrew it. She also got a junior bed. They will be able to use those bed for a long time (they are 9 1/2, 7 and almost 4 now and all 3 have plenty of room to grow in their beds).
We switched just before her second birthday to a toddler bed. Then I accidentally gave away her mattress to our neighbor (I was thinking because she was not in a crib anymore we did not need it....toddler bed....hellllllllooooooo!) So then we had to switch her to a "big girl" bed. She still ends up in bed with us almost every night so it really does not matter what kind of bed she has.
Sebastian switched at 18 months. He was a climber as well and I was worried about him falling out of it. He never had a toddler bed, I put him first on his crib mattress on the floor of our bedroom next to my side of the bed, and then into a twin bed.
Our 1st son was 13 months old when we put him in a toddler bed. He had no problems at all adjusting from a crib to a bed. He only fell out of it once while he was sleeping. And as for keeping him in his room we put a baby gate on his door frame. He has been happy ever since. We plan on putting our 2nd son in a toddler bed as soon as he can walk and climb up on things.
i had to switch my son at 16 months old in to a toddler bed because i just had my baby and she needed the crib but he was ready to get in to his bed and he didnt do a bad job he went straight in to his bed the first night we put him in it, and he always wanted to sleep in our bed so we figured we might as well get him his own and we just shut the door intill he falls alseep then we crack it open so when he wakes up in the morning he can come in our room and wake us up, and yes he did fall out of it a few times but he's 18 months old and he don't fall out anymore.
I switched dd at 14 mos. Had a free toddler bed from a neightbor, she was getting tangled in the bars so bad her limbs were turning blue/purple! And just figured it was time! She's now 27 mos and hasn't spent a night outside of her bed. She loves it and putting her to bed has actually gotten easier! I used to have to rock her but now we both sit in her bed and read 3-4 books, turn out the lights, say prayers and it's bedtimes! She's never fallen out and I'm so glad I switched her when I did!
