If I have to hear about Zhu Zhu Pets one more time! It seems every kid wants one this year, and I just don't get it. It's a hamster on wheels, people!
(But then again I have enough residual childhood pet hamster trauma to last a lifetime.)
Is your child mad for Zhu Zhu Pets this holiday season?
Zhu Zhu Pets are little motorized hamsters that will scurry around your house and, if you buy them too, in their hamster tubes and cars, etc. Apparently, they also like to be snuggled too and they coo, purr, and squeak when you pet them. And now, due to their popularity, many stores are selling out.
Here are just a *few* recent Zhu Zhu conversations on CafeMom:
Did any one list Zhu Zhu Pets recently?
Any other Mom's tearing their hair out trying to find zhu zhu pets? lol
I wasn't kidding. It appears that moms might be as Zhu Zhu obsessed as kids. And yes, in case you missed it, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has deemed the toys safe. So carry on with your gerbil frenzies, mamas.
But don't forget: Zhu Zhu Pets are not for children under three years. Choking hazard.
Would you get your 3-, 4- or 5-year old toddler a Zhu Zhu pet? Why or why not?

My preschooler asked for one, but I don't ever see them anywhere, and I refuse to kill myself going all over town for this thing, lol...There will be a million of them the day after Christmas, I'll get her one then and call it a "happy new year" present, lol....I think it's cute and all but YEARS of this happening every year right before Christmas has taught me that in general, not much is worth all the hassle or hoopla- I'll make a reasonable attempt to get them what they want, but I'm not one to go crazy, especially knowing in a week or two this won't matter in the least.
I don't think my kids even know what they are. They've never mentioned them. I don't get into all that trendy toy craze (like when Tickle Me Elmo was popular). If I found one cheap (like on sale) some day I might pick it up because there is this running joke in the house about the hamster in my 7yo daughter's brain...it never wants to stay on it's wheel and that's why she acts goofy all the time. She would love it. But other then that, I wouldn't go out of my way or pay much for a toy like that.
There are a lot of toys my kids have wanted over the years that they never got because I refuse to pay the cost for them.
Oh, my daughter is obsessed for sure. A word of warning, when the instructions say these hamsters are not a BED TOY, heed them! My daughter slept with hers, rolled on it in the middle of the night, and the wheels went off and caught in her hair. There we are at 3 a.m. with the scissors. Carolyn will be getting an nice short bob haircut after Christmas.
I don't think my kids have even seen the ads for them. They are really hard to get their hands on here in Canada (stores are supposed to get some before X-mas but so far they haven't even been in stores in my area.) So I'm glad that they aren't asking for them!
The 'fake pet' thing kind of puzzles me... to me the nice part of a pet is the relationship you have with that animal. You care for them, they care for you. A synthetic pet does not care for you. We do have a couple 'Fur Real' animals, and even those I find a bit strange! We have real guinea pigs... they also run around and squeak, I think I will stick with them and skip the zhu zhu craze!
oh my dd and my ss both are asking for them i was lucky enough and bought a ton LOL, now i am selling the 2 left overs on ebay, but i was able to get one for dd my ss and our nephew and even one for myslef (num num)
i also got dd and ss the starter kit the ball and the car for ss and the spiral slide for dd, my nephew got just the ball and i just go the hamster. I cannot wait until the new ones come out! i may sell the slide and car w/the 2 extra zhu zhus' and buy them the new hamswters after christmas
I just saw a bunch in Toys R Us and considered selling them on craigslist, but I'm headed out of town today. My daughter is only three and hasn't even heard of them. She is getting a Fur Real cat from her uncle though, I suppose that's sort of similar.
i don't know i kinda wanted one cause i want a real hamster and my husband had some bad childhood memory of his hamster so he doesn't want one. but i just think it doesn't look like it would really be that interesting. my three year old boy would probably play with it for a hour or so then get bored. i may get it for him for his birthday in april when all the frenzy is died down and they are normal price who knows.
I can say blissfully that my daughter has never heard of a Zhu Zhu pet. The blessing of a broken tv and a kid that only watches PBS Kids.
I don't think I would get her one anyhow. She has enough stuffed animals, and she has plenty of fun with "Tinycat" and "Tinydog" (the stuffed animals that came with a pretend veterinary care playset she got last year at Christmas - and they're safe to be tucked in at bedtime!).
My daughter wanted one but I didn't get her one I just don't think she'd play with it for very long.
Is it about getting your kid a toy they'll play with for 5 minutes or is it really about "showing up" the parents who don't get their kids one?
My kid won't get the hot toy of the season ever... I'm not killing myself for a danged toy. Name one kid that will still care about the stupid things come February! :)
