It's time for a Mom Confession -- because, let's face it, we're real mothers and sometimes it doesn't work the way the parenting books say it should.
This Week's Confession:
I've given my kid Benedryl to ensure an early bedtime because I just couldn't take it anymore. I needed sleep but I've only done it once or twice and only a small amount. — anonymous
We all have secrets -- so thanks to this brave mom for sharing her honest thoughts, and thank you for keeping this conversation non-judgmental!
Do you have a Mom Confession you want to share? PM me. We can share your confession with your CafeMom screenname or anonymously.

I have heard Mom's saying they were going to do it and they add a giggle, I always wonder if they do for real. I think there are other options. I give my daughter a nice warm bath, turn the lights off in the living room and turn the cartoons on very softly (Nick Jr gears all their cartoons to going to sleep when it's really late at night), I make her hot cocoa (with no caffeine of course), I do all kinds of things. But to me, being a Mom means not getting sleep sometimes, it is part of the job! Plus, it's a job I love so I take the bad with the good!
Now, some of you really need to lighten up! I can't believe you are yelling at Cafemom for posting this question. The question was asked some place else and they just moved it into here for discussion. What a great idea too because you helped it get a lot of responses, which is what they really were looking for I am sure! You guys really give yourself a lot of credit to think that the Cafemom team has nothing better to do but find posts that will piss you off! hee hee It is not like they are saying that they all do it to their kids. They are asking for an opinion! If the Mom Confessions were something like "I feed my daughter all fruits and veggies" would it really need to be called Mom Confessions then? If you dislike this feature that much, don't read it! (JMO)
slightly off topic, but....i find it interesting that some people talk about medicines as horrible poisons and suggest "natural remedies"....if the natural methods always worked there wouldnt have been a market for medications....and if medicines are poison, why is our mortality rate drastically lower and life expectancy drastically higher than it was 200 yrs ago?
I think we all know exactly how trying a grumpy child can be--especially when we are exhausted and are close to pulling our hair out. But I never give my child medicine unless they need it. I don't take medicine unless I need it.
It's just too dangerous.
Yea, right now in my current state I would notdo it. However, I do not want to say never do it. Depending on stress level and hyperactivity it may be better to do it. I know the other night my LO would not go to sleep..i mean she would not do it..2 am and the this kid had been up since 7am with only an 2 hour nap..if I had something to help her sleep I would have used it. I was getting fusrtated she was wired and cranky. So for all of you who are saying never and no, how could this mother do it...think about your behavior before you judge her harshly.
Roseplus, remember that we all have kids here. Some of us can say quite easily that we'd NEVER do it and have every right to be appalled.
Peajewel, I agree with you. I think it's GOOD they bring up these "Confessions." People can see, anonymously, what people actually think of the choices they've made... and sometimes, they REALLY need to see the opinions so they can rethink their actions. Some of these confessions have been scary and dangerous.
our daughter for the last for months has not been sleeping .wakes up every hour after midnight until 7am shes four and in preschool the teachers have started to notice that shes to tired to participate in activitys .she has a normal night time routine that starts around 7 pm .yet she still wakes all night its tiring for her and everyone else so ,we took her to her doctors and she told us to give her a tsp of benadryl a night for a week and then take her off of it .now she is sleeping threw the night .
Never would I do this. The only time I medicate my child is when there is something that needs to be treated, pain, fever, constipation, infection and never for MY benefit. Our babies trust us with their bodies, they are too young to take care of them by themselves, this just should never be abused....
simiplicity, quite frankly, I'd get a new doctor.
i thought about it, almost did and decided against it. i made myself a drink instead
i used to babysit for a family with 3 extra hyper kids ! and the older one (the most energetic of the three lol who was 3.5 yrs old then ) got a cold or sumthing , the point is that his mom told us to give him benadryl 3 times a day (we were 3 babysitters workind different hours , but some days we worked together for few hours ) and she wrote down the times in a paper . but we were so excited about the one at night time , cuz da meant , that he wanst gonna put a fight to go to sleep !
cuz bedtime was sooo hard , that the three of us , hated it ! lol
i we never gave him the medicineunless he's mom asked us to !
