Mom Confessions: My Kids Sleep Alone in the Car

59

houseIt's time for a Mom Confession -- because, let's face it, we're real mothers and sometimes it doesn't work the way the parenting books say it should.

This Week's Confession:

In comfortable weather, during the day, I let my kids nap in the car in the driveway if they fall asleep on the way home from somewhere. We live in a two-stoplight town with very low crime rates. I park the car in the driveway where I can see it from the house and lock the doors. I go out every five minutes or so to peek in at them and check the temperature inside the van to make sure it's not too warm or too cool for them. But some people (my mom) still think it's terrible that I do this. I check on them so much and they're all locked up that they're probably safer in there than in their bedrooms! -- anonymous

if you check on them every 5 minutes you might as well either stay with them in the car or just take them in.  Why risk it?

Heck no.. never. Wouldn't even cross my mind..
There's no such thing as a safe city or even neighborhood.. crimes happen any & everywhere. I personally wouldn't chance my childrens' safety.

No, never, never NEVER under any circumstances, NO!

I don't think it's neglect...geez.

Would I do it?   No.  But it sounds like the mom is keeping a close eye on the car, so...

I think that  if you feel lik your child is safe, its fine. I wish I could do that. How many times has my child fallen asleep and I have wished that I could roll the windows down and let her sleep while I get work done. Those who are saying neglect are just plain mean. Stop judging.

I've left my DS in the car sleeping with the windows open, in the garage (but door is open), and the doors to the house open. Although I only did it when I was carrying in groceries or running into the bathroom after being out. He is one of those kids that you can't touch when they are sleeping or they wake up so it was the best way to do it.

We have a attached garage that I can jump out of the laundry room and touch the car but I still wouldn't leave my son in it. I am so parianod, I couldn't leave him in the car. My rule of thumb is if I can't touch the car while he is in it, I am to far away.

That is awful.  I might as well leave my baby out on the front lawn in his car seat while I go to the bathroom real quick.

No I would never do this. We live in a small town too but come on, anything can happen.

My kids fall asleep in the car all the time but as soon as we get home, they come inside and we lay them down in bed. If they wake up and turn into brats (if that's what she was trying to avoid) so be it, let them be brats. Most of the time they just fall right back asleep. I check on them periodically even when they're sleeping in their own beds.

I will leave them in there, but not while I go inside.  I'm too afraid they'd wake up and be scared.  Crime doesn't worry me at my house.  I live way out in the country, about 2 miles from the nearest neighbor, and our driveway is over a 1/4 mile long.  Yeah, some crazy is going to drive miles and miles into the country, see a car waaaay down this insanely long driveway, and think hmmm, let's see if there's a kid in there.  Yeah, not likely.  But if I get home and one or more of the kids is sleeping, I'll leave them in their car seat while I unload the others and bring everything inside.  I'll quickly put perishables in the fridge, and then we work and/or play outside until the sleeping child is awake.
