Mom Confessions: I Let My Son Fall Asleep to DVDs

mom confessionsIt's time for a Mom Confession — because, let's face it, we're real mothers and sometimes it doesn't work the way the parenting books say it should.

This Week's Confession:

I let my son fall asleep to DVDs.

My son is a horrible sleeper. He never wants to sleep in his bed. So on some nights (okay..most nights), I let him watch a movie on his portable DVD player in bed. -- amy985

On desperate occasions when I have a bunch of housework to do and don't want to spend the time in the bed-time routine YES I'll let my son watch a movie and then if he doesn't fall asleep he just goes to sleep with me.

For a while he did fall asleep to TV almost every night and it wasn't until 10pm or later.  This was killing me so I made up a bedtime routine and chart that works WONDERS!  "The Mat" as he calls it, is 8 pictures (clip-art from Microsoft Office) and the words laminated on the chart.  It goes with shower/bath-jammies-brush teeth-drink water-potty-reading-goodnight kisses-goodnight! My son gets to tell me what is next, he does it with no arguing, and he is excited about it and it worked from night one! Now he's asleep by 8:30 at the latest and I can have at least an hour to finish house work before I knock out at 9:30. It's really a life saver.  It also helps for the rare occasion that I am not home and my husband has to do bed-time.

I do let my 16 month watch a DVD before he goes to sleep some nights.. typically when he is no way ready for bed and I gotta get up early (we sleep in the same room).  But its baby einstien!!! How can you go wrong with that?? its the First Signs one, and before he watched it he knew 0 signs, and now he knows 5+!!
