It's time for a Mom Confession — because, let's face it, we're real mothers and sometimes it doesn't work the way the parenting books say it should.
This Week's Confession:
I let my son fall asleep to DVDs.
My son is a horrible sleeper. He never wants to sleep in his bed. So on some nights (okay..most nights), I let him watch a movie on his portable DVD player in bed. -- amy985

We let them do it when we travel, it helps them relax in unfamiliar places. But once we get home, no more. My 5 year old gets it, my 2 year old usually cries the first night but after that she is fine. At home they listen to the radio very softly at night.
I don't intentionally have my children fall asleep to a DVD or music, and they don't have a TV in their room. However, if we're all watching a movie on the couch in the evening, my child might crash and that's okay with me. :-)
I personally don't like the idea of having a tv in my child's room so I would not do that. My son watches tv in the livingroom in the afternoon though.
call me a bad mom and bash all u want i let my dd fall asleep to a dvd everynite its the only way i can get her to stay in her room if she doesnt have the tv then she in my room every 1/2 hr saying she scared i use the tv more for a night light than anything b/c some nites when shes really tired all i have to do is turn the tv on and let the dvd player go to the main screen...maybe its the music maybe its the light but i know a nite light doesnt work and cio method doesnt work everynite
My daughter and I share a room and our bed times are different. She only watches Noggin and Sprout, so she's learning while she watches. During the day it's Noggin since they have you get up and move around. At night she watches Spout because they have the Goodnight Show that helps get kids ready for bed and it works. She goes to sleep every night at 9 pm.
ive never honstely had to do this, but i dont think its bad. if it works for your child than cool, you have established a routine, & thats a good thing. i have a friend that does this for her two toddlers and it is very effective for them. they are also very indepedent kids & turn off the tv when they are done & put themselves to sleep thereafter. i was always impressed by that. i cant see myself ever implementing a good night movie, but never know what my daughter will need in the future, maybe there will be a program in the future that is soothing enough to calm her for bedtime in the future. we as parents have to stay open to new possiblities.
My 3 year old gets to watch 1 show before she goes to bed, as part of our nightly routine. I usually make it a 15 min show. I dont do DVD or TV in her room though. She will stay up all night long watching, she knows how to work the portable DVD player. She does use the portable DVD player to go to sleep when we travel.
whats wrong with letting your child fall asleep to music? we have a huge collection of classical, jazz, tunes from around the world that pertain to sleeping since when is that wrong?
I used to use music, video's whatever, but nothing worked, he just wouldn't fall asleep till 2 or 3 in the morning, he is 18 now and at college, and it has remained the same, he would cat nap sometimes in the afternoons but for the most part straight a student who barely slept , played sports and did awesome at them, finished as most popular in his school, and many scholarships to a great school. his little brother is exactly the oposite, he needs his sleep, and we tried movies, music, and now he is using melatonin to reset his body clock, it is working and he is waking happy, and ready for school, and activities.
Until his cat died, my son would have to have him right next to him or he would never go to sleep and he would sit and freak out. So if it takes a DVD then go for it.
