Mom Confessions: I Don't Shield My Kids' Eyes from Nudity

by Sheri Reed on August 21, 2009 at 11:00 AM

mom confessionsIt's time for a Mom Confession — because, let's face it, we're real mothers and sometimes it doesn't work the way the parenting books say it should.

This Week's Confession:

I don't shield my kids' eyes from nudity.

I don't think there's anything wrong with nudity, and I don't shield my toddler's eyes from nudity. With all the things wrong in the world and the things you can find on cable television, nudity is not one I'm worried about. I don't flaunt nudity all about, but if my toddler happens upon it, I don't hide my own nudity, nudity on TV or movies, or nudity in books or art. We even have a beautiful nude painting in our living room. Violence, now that's a separate issue for me. -- anonymous

I would shield them from nudity which was say.. a sex scene in a movie.. because my son is 4 and would FOR SURE be like "mom what are they doing?" and that's not a talk we're ready to have!

But art? no.. I wont cover up art. my fashion magazines (W, Vogue) have topless women sometimes.. they've seen that. Its just breasts.. they have been so sexualized (not a real word, lol) by our society we forget what they are there for, and its directly related to kiddos. And from time to time they will catch me changing and since when do I even get to pee without company?

I don't need to shield my three year old from nudity because I do not allow her to watch things on TV that have the possibility of nudity. Nude art she wouldn't notice, and we shower together, so I definitely don't mind her seeing me or my hubby on our way in our out of the shower.

I dont let my son watch tv shows that are for adults. We also don't have nasty movies in our home either. Art oustside the home like at a gallery is a different story but we haven't gont to one yet so there isn't a big deal about any of that.

I'm not going to let him watch XXX movies but he loves horror movies and sometimes its in the and on Family guy and stuff and I can't change my shirt around him or he pokes my breast and then his I guess to see what the difference is. I guess within reason I would.

Only if it's blatantly sexual, like RanaAurora said.  We walk around nude quite often in the mornings and before bed.  Even my teenagers have been known to go from the shower to the bedroom nude.  There is nothing wrong with the nude body.  I don't think that toddlers should be exposed to outright sexuality, but I would still prefer that to violence.

Nudity ad human body is one thing sex is another...I walk around the house a lot   in just a bra n tee shirt. or naked while getting ready for work. Same as my SO. I see no problem if its an educational program, book, art, or out somewhere that people my be changing like at the pool locker room. I see no problem. Now if its something Obviously sexual then I will try to avoid or hide it.

nudity in art or natural no shielding her- sex scenes yes, for fear she will re-enact them as she does EVERYTHING she takes in, lol. In general though, we don't censor much- we feel the less of a big deal we make of it, the less of a big deal it will seem to the kids.

My daughter's a little too young for me to worry about shielding nudity (she's 14 months old).
