Mom Confessions: I'm Going to Disney Without the Children

Summer Survival Guide

mom confessionsIt's time for a Mom Confession -- because, let's face it, we're real mothers and sometimes it doesn't work the way the parenting books say it should.

This Week's Confession:

My husband and I are going to Disney but are leaving my toddler and baby with my parents.

I have a 2 year old old and a 9 month old. We bought a family package and were going to take both of them, but now my parents are offering to babysit so we can really enjoy ourselves. At first I didn't even consider it, but we have never been on a vacation by ourselves. We didn't have a honeymoon, either.

I will feel kinda guilty going to Disney without my 2 year old. She would really enjoy it. But it will be so nice for the both of us to hang out like we've never done before. -- anonymous

I don't get it.  I'm ALL for mom and dad time, but seriously going to Disney without them?

THIS!

I'd go to AdultCon or something...lol...no, but seriously.  I have no problem with getting a sitter for a night in the town with my hubby but I wouldn't go to Disney or somewhere similar without the kids.

I remember my parents took my sister and I to Disney when she was 5 and I was 7.  First thing they took us on was the backlot tour, part of which was Castrophy Canyon, where they blow up a tanker and then douse it with water, showing off movie magic.  My sister and I were so scared afterward that they dragged us around the entire day and weren't able to get us to go on more than a couple rides.  At the age my kids are at, (6 months and 2 years) I wouldn't take them to Disney, because A. They're too small for the rides, and B. From experiance, I think they'd be more scared than have fun.

I would take a trip without the kids, but not to Disney. If you have paid for a family pack, then just take them with you. Perhaps a better option would be to get the grandparents to go too. That is what we did. We all had alone time and we all got to see our daughter's reactions to seeing what she loved. It was great!!!!

I took the kids to Disneyland and regretted it.  All they did was whine & complain the whole time.  When they are teens & I can let them go there own way, I'll take them again

i couldn't imagine going to Disney without my daughter....my hubby and I never had a honeymoon either...but that didn't matter to us (when we got married i was 8 months pregnant)...we took our daughter when she was just shy of 2...and she had a BLAST!!! she STILL talks about meeting all the characters and getting on the rides...yeah the 9 month old might not enjoy it but they have child swap oppurtunities...so that you and hubby can trade off....i think it is a little selfish to go to disney without the kiddos...i personally would feel super guilty if i left them home...if you are going to go on a vacation...go somewhere else...that way when you go to disney it will be as a family and you can enjoy it as a family experience....

Sahm.... Sahm.I.am

At 2 yrs and 9 months old, the kids may enjoy themselves but will they REALLY remember even going?  I've had a few opportunities to go to Disney World with my children but I felt they weren't old enough to really enjoy and remember.  I went with my family when I was 3 and 4 and I don't remember (neither do my younger siblings), if there weren't pictures I would never had even known.  We're going next month, they are now 6 and turning 5 during our trip. So I probably would take the offer if I was in anonymous' situation.

I wouldn't go to DISNEY by myself.  If I'm going somewhere alone, I'd go somewhere that isn't designed FOR children.

don't feel bad!!! parents need to focus on their relationship too so they can be the best parents possible. if that means a full vacation away from the kids, go for it! when my oldest was 9 months old my sister got married. my MIL babysat from Thurs-Sun. around halloween last yr, when my youngest was 6 months and oldest 22 months, hubby and i went "away" to Nashville [we live in the suburbs, moved last July] and MIL again babysat. the last weekend of this month we are going to a wedding i am in for a friend from college, again MIL is babysitting from Thurs-Sun. and again, in Sept we have another wedding that hubby is in and my parents are coming to watch my kids from Fri-Sun. its just easier to go by ourselves and leave our kids with family. have fun!!

Well My son is 20 months and has been to Disney 2 times. Once when he was 14 months old and again 18 months old. He loved it and I loved it. And my parents are taking him again in December. It's an awesome place for everyone. They are young and wont remember. But it is your memories, and your vacation in Disney. Since we are all BIG kids at heart, I understand going without them, and taking them when they are older.
