Moms were trading some pretty breakfast pizza recipe ideas -- a brainstorm idea in the picky-eating toddler realm -- in The CafeMom Newcomer's Club the other day. They talked about making them with real pizza dough, Bisquick or Pillsbury dough, with lots of gravy, sausage and cheese.
I'm on an exercise kick and went on a cyber-hunt for something a little less gooey and meaty for my tots and I.
Little did I know this is a tall order. I didn't want the uber-healthy pizza that's essentially salsa and a smattering of cheese and egg whites on a pita, nor did I want the meat and cheese laden tin of fat and calories.
So I decided on this breakfast pizza recipe from Taste of Home. At 330 calories and 24 grams of fat a slice, it's not exactly low cal, but a bit closer when I adapted it with my own additions and subtractions. Or you can stick to the plan and just serve smaller slices.
Breakfast Pizza (from Taste of Home)
Prep time: 10 mins.
Bake time: 30 mins. + standing
You'll need:
1 tube (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent rolls
1 pound bulk pork sausage (I subbed turkey sausage)
1 cup frozen shredded hash brown potatoes, thawed
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese (I subbed 2% fat)
3 eggs (I subbed 4 eggs minus two yolks)
1/4 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Make it:
1. Unroll crescent dough and place on a greased 12-in. pizza pan; press seams together and press up sides of pan to form a crust.
2. In a skillet, brown sausage over medium heat; drain and cool slightly. Sprinkle sausage, hash browns and cheddar cheese over crust.
3. In a bowl, beat eggs, milk and pepper; pour over pizza. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake at 375° for 28-30 minutes or until golden brown.
4. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting.
C'mon, don't make me come up with these toddler recipes all on my own. I want to know what YOU feed your toddler's for lunch and dinner. Send me a PM and share your recipes so I can feature them here!

To make a pizza healthier, I would use a whole wheat crust. I usually just make my own, or sometimes I use whole grain bread or whole grain pita bread. Instead of sausage, I would use some nitrate and nitrite free turkey bacon. It's easy to think of healthier alternatives if you think creatively. I would top my pizza with sliced baby spinach and tomatoes as well, to up the nutrition value. Remember, the more you serve veggies to your kids, the more likely they will give in and eat em'.
if my daugther will eat anything besides pasta, trust me i will be PMing you like nuts. I love to cook but my dauther just decides to refuse to eat it =-( i'll send a couple, might not work for me but sure it might work for someone ese =-D
You should make one with sugar cookie dough, cream cheese,Powder sugar icing and fresh fruit. I have a recipe for one that is sooo yummy. And its not terrbly loaded with sugar. I think its a great way to start the day
