Mom Confessions: I Sleep While My Kid Is Up

46

sleeping while toddler is awakeIt's time for a Mom Confession -- because, let's face it, we're real mothers and sometimes it doesn't work the way the parenting books say it should.

This Week's Confession:

I sometimes nap while my son is awake. -- anonymous

Occassionally, my son wakes up before I do. He knows how to work the TV and recorder, and he'll go down and watch a movie. -- anonymous

I'm about to conk out, but my daughter is still awake. I hate sleeping when she's up no matter how safe I make my house, but I'm so tired I can't help it! -- anonymous

How do you cope with sleepiness when your toddler is bursting with energy? Do you make them lay down for rest time -- plop them in front of a movie -- put up the child gate and let them play in their room while you catch some ZZZs? Or do you go running for the coffee?

We all have secrets and opinions -- so thanks to these brave moms for sharing their honest thoughts, and thank you for keeping this conversation non-judgemental!

Since this is in the toddler buzz, I'll answer the way I was when my son was a toddler. ;)

Kind of.  I'd lay on the couch, bend my knees, and then put my kiddo in the triangle that was made between the back of the couch and my bent legs.  He could have a drink, a snack, and a show/movie on, and I could get some rest.   Not great sleep of course, but enough to get you buy when you need it!  Plus, he couldn't even so much as get off the couch without waking me up, since he'd have to climb over me to do it.

I deal with bouts of fatigue so there is some times i cant help it. I will get up with her get her breakfast and her milk and doze off on the couch wile she watches her morning cartoons. but its always in the room with her. so if she was going to wonder around getting into stuff i would hear her.

Thank GOD I'm not the only one :) It's rare, but it has happened. The 'worst' thing that happens is I wake up and he is having a snack :)

This completely depends on the kid! My oldest was fine...when I was pregnant I could put him at our computer (he was 2yrs) with a movie and doze off and on. Now, my 2yr there is no way I would let him near our computer unattended..or intentionally doze off!!! Plus, I have nieces that there would be no way I would BLINK with them there!! LOL!! All depends on the kid!

i use to when it was just me and my oldest and dh was away. but since dh is laid off i just tell him i need a few more minutes and he'll take care of the kids.

My son is only 17 months.  As soon as he wakes up (630 on the weekends-we get up at 4 during the week for work) we are up and out of bed and get the day started.  I will only take a nap if he does.  I will not leave him up unattended.  That really scares me.

I never ever let my kids stay awake...anymore. i used to think it was ok to leave my mature 4 year old awake watching a movie while me and my 3 year old napped with the baby, untillllll the 5 year old grabbed a butcher knife (this is really scary) and cut huge holes in the couch. the knives were on top of the fridge in a block the entire house was completely safe. he climbed up on a chair got the knife and climbed back down. he couldve dropped the knife on his foot or fallen and it went in his eye. i was HORRIFIED and most definitely will never ever leave a child unattended while i sleep ever again. they know knife safety now and the knives are in the cupboard on top of the fridge locked with a key so it will never happen again

My 2 year old wakes up as soon as daylight touches the room. So, i get him out of his bed, and let him down to play while i lay in the bed. He shares a room with my boyfriend and I, so he will sometimes crawl in the bed with me and cuddle....

I have a 1yr old and im 7 months pregnant. So yes, i do sleep while she's awake. I never turn on the tv though.. I put her in her playard with some of her favorite toys and i nap on the couch. When she stands up and looks at me, then begins to scream my "name" i get up and play with her. It usually works for 30 - 45 minutes and GOD IT HELPS.
