Mom Confessions: I Sleep While My Kid Is Up

sleeping while toddler is awakeIt's time for a Mom Confession -- because, let's face it, we're real mothers and sometimes it doesn't work the way the parenting books say it should.

This Week's Confession:

I sometimes nap while my son is awake. -- anonymous

Occassionally, my son wakes up before I do. He knows how to work the TV and recorder, and he'll go down and watch a movie. -- anonymous

I'm about to conk out, but my daughter is still awake. I hate sleeping when she's up no matter how safe I make my house, but I'm so tired I can't help it! -- anonymous

How do you cope with sleepiness when your toddler is bursting with energy? Do you make them lay down for rest time -- plop them in front of a movie -- put up the child gate and let them play in their room while you catch some ZZZs? Or do you go running for the coffee?

We all have secrets and opinions -- so thanks to these brave moms for sharing their honest thoughts, and thank you for keeping this conversation non-judgemental!

I work nights so on my days off I tend to sleep late.  My daughter sleeps late too, though.  She usually ends up getting up before me, but she is almost 8 now, so she can fend for herself for a little while!!

I nap when my son naps, but there have been times where I'm extremely tired while he's awake.  I put in his favorite movie, & he watches it.  I sit on the couch & doze off, but I'm not fully asleep, I always wake up & if he catches me asleep, he climbs on me & shouts...MA!!!

lately my son has been getting up earlier than i am ready (we're getting over jetlag) so I've been bringing him to my bed and i'll put on cartoons for him. I actually slept in til 10 this morning-first time since i had him i think! but my husband was up with him, so i knew he was ok.
As for napping, the only time i've done that is recently at the beginning of my pregnancy, and I just put on a movie I knew he was into...i think he actually would lay on the couch with me and rest too, so i know he didn't get into anything

My son has autism and doesn't sleep through the night ever.  For example for the past two weeks 3 AM has been his chosen "wake-up time" and he will stay up for 4-5 hours every night before he goes back to sleep.

My DH works a job now to where he doesn't go into work until 1 PM, so we work it out now.  But when he used to work mornings sometimes I would let my son watch TV for like an hour in the morning while I slept on the couch.  It was the only way I could make it sometimes, no one can stay up 24/7.

I admit there are some days I just don't think I will make it through the day. My some will play while I cat nap on the sofa. But the neat thing is I am resting but hearing what is going on at the same time. I dont usually sleep for more than 20 to 30 min total but it seems to be enough to make it.

I gotta say that I am surprised by the results!  I can honestly say I have never napped while my children were awake!

Yep! My daughter will get up before me on mornings that she doesn't have school, and she'll just play in her room. When she wants out, she'll knock on her door and I'll get up and get her.

Also, I will lay down for naps at the same time she does. Sometimes she decides to get up and play instead of napping, but I don't really worry about it. I seem to be one of those people who needs lots more sleep than normal.

I also get frequent migraines, so if daddy's out to sea, I put a movie on for her and I got lie down in my room. If she needs me she'll come in and get me. She's three and she's really good about not getting into stuff.

Yes i sleep while my young ones are up, i close my door and say no one leaves this room, i put in a kids movie and i sleep.

I won't yet. I feel he is too young to be doing things by himself all the time. He's 18 months old.
