Product Review: My Hold Right Pencil

Cynthia Dermody

I periodically put new toddler products through rigorous, real-mom testing -- which means I use them and tell you what I think.

This week's product: My Hold Right Pencil by Ticonderoga: $5.79 for 3 at

What it is: A three-sided pencil: red, yellow, and green. Each color is designated for one of the three fingers used in a proper pencil grip: red for the thumb, green for the middle finger, and yellow for the index finger. The pencils, slightly thicker than a normal pencil for tiny toddler hands, come with sticker dots in those same colors to place on the fingernails and help kids keep track of what finger goes where.

My review: A great, simple idea. If you are going to buy your kid a pencil anyway, why not pick up this one. My 4 year old is just learning to write her name, and she took to this product right away. The most exciting part for her was getting to put the little colored dots on her fingernails. I don't let her wear nail polish, so for her this was the next best thing.

Of course, she insisted on putting stickers on each and every fingernail -- beyond just the three that you're supposed to -- but aside from that, the pencil helped her assume the correct writing position.
