Mom Confession: My Kids Go to Bed After Midnight

mom confessionsIt's time for a Mom Confession -- because, let's face it, we're real mothers and sometimes it doesn't work the way the parenting books say it should.

This Week's Confession:

I have three kids under three, and we all go to bed after midnight and wake up at 11 a.m. the next day.

Do you believe in traditional sleep hours for toddlers? Is there any harm in letting a toddler keep teenager hours? Is there any reason you could think of that would make this wrong?

We all have secrets and opinions -- so thanks to these brave moms for sharing their honest thoughts, and thank you for keeping this conversation non-judgemental!

my kids and i all have sleeping issues. some nights i can't fall asleep until late and other nights they can't. a lot of it has to do with my work schedule. i work from home and i tell you...it's not all it is cracked up to be. if i had a 9 to 5 job i would be on a schedule and done, but nope, not with owning my own successful biz. it's crazy here.

As a teacher, all I can say is good luck getting your children up and ready for school on time!

I agree that if you are a stay home mom and can keep that kind of schedule, then go for it.  Before my son was in school we stayed up late sometimes.  Once he started school I got him to bed early enough that he would wake up "organically" each morning,  so I would KNOW that he had enough sleep.  We still do that and it works very well for us.  On weekends and in the summer we are much more lax,  but during the school year,  we stick with a reasonable bedtime so we know that he will wake up on his own and be refreshed for learning.

This is an on-going issue for me.  I don't get enough sleep, my husband doesn't get enough sleep and bed time is a huge problem.  I'm doing everything I can to avoid tantrums because I just can't handle it - I'm over-tired, and my DH has no patience at night (he's over tired too, and puts in really long days.)

If I had gotten enough sleep to get up at a reasonable hour, I would've taken a shower and taken my son out to the park, etc. to tire him out. As it is, I can't think straight, I stink (even more now that I've cleaned house a little) and don't want to leave the house. Now he won't be tired enough to be reasonable tonight... it becomes this big circular thing...

Any ideas? I've been a veritable hermit for almost 3 years now.

Anyway..  I'm off to throw some food on the table - maybe I can shower while the hubby is eating...

When I was little I would try to wait up for my mom because she chose to work late (even though she didn't have to).  My dad would get upset because she always messed up our schedule.  To this day I have sleep problems because, like someone else said, it's not a schedule, it's a lifestyle.  My kids to go to bed between 7:30 and 8 every night even though their daddy doesn't get home until 10:30-11 because it's what's best for them.  My oldest is in school but even when he wasn't he was in bed at 9 since he was a baby.  My 2 y/o goes to bed at the same time he does.

I'm a night person and usually work nights so I've always had the kids on my schedule so that I could spend more time with them and I can sleep in.....when they start school I know it will be all about their schedule but until then it's late bedtime for us :)
